The finish is perhaps the weakest link in the Clynelish chain, aside from the astringent mouth feel around the teeth and gums. It has a one-of-a-kind nose and taste, but I'm still trying to figure out what's going on in the finish. I've had quite a few independent single cask bottlings from Clynelish that stand out more and are more enjoyable in both nose and taste that come close to 90points in my book. The bitterness on the finish I noted in the review has rounded and mellowed a great deal with the bottle somewhat oxidised.

The mouthfeel was thick and full and coated the palate like nothing I had enjoyed before, helping the fruit and spices to pop. At first the finish is abrupt, but the more you come back to this whisky, the better the finish gets. If you like Mac 15, you will like this though it is different - definitely more aggressive, not quite as smooth and refined.

Brilliant sub-strata of peat runs throughout and adds a luscious sweetness to compliment the sultanas and spice. The combination of salt water and lemons reminds me of those cool months when dad brings home a sack of raw oysters and we spend most of the day shucking them and eating them on the spot. Nose: Very subtle smoke and sweet citrus fruit, particularly those giant incredible lemons from Sorrento. If I could nose it for an hour, then let it swim around in my mouth forever without having to swallow, it would easily rate a 90-plus.This is a palate whisky, the nose almost shy and muted: glints of citrus and jellied fruits, notes of ozone/spiciness and stem ginger. I find it very similar to the Clynelish 14 yr - however it's a tad bit more "dry", a pinch more salt, and a fairly short finish. Old Clynelish' was mothballed in 1968 and re-opened as 'Brora' the following year, focusing on peated malt. The smell is initially sea salt, peat, smoke and even a hint of iodine, but gives way to a fruity, vanilla, toffee sweetness.

Located in Highland region, Clynelish 14 year old single malt whisky comes from a distillery built opposite the nowadays silent Brora distillery.Taste: Beeswax, honey and a whiff of white pepper, but also caramel and red apples, as well as peaches.

John Glaser of Compass Box, who previously worked for Johnnie Walker as a marketing director, uses Clynelish in most of his Compass Box blends. Keeping Clynelish’s signature flavour profile was at the top of the priority list, but immediately after the reopening it had completely disappeared. Well, this one’s bottled at the enthusiast’s minimum bid of 46% and while I can pretty much guarantee E150a is present (but not heavily dosed), I think it’s non-chill filtered; I’ve poured a second measure into a tumbler over ice and it’s clouded up a storm.Unusually peaty for a mainland whisky, this sherry and bourbon cask matured spirit is wonderfully layered, composed of honeyed fruit and briney notes.
