About this deal

The various characters and their backstories were interesting, but the reason for the crime still escapes me: I really had to suspend my disbelief to accept the summing up.

Theo says that very early on the morning the body was discovered he saw a girl near Daniel’s boat with blood all over her.The young woman Laura, a tragic past, I felt sorry for and Irene a older woman, with a big heart, the only character I actually liked. While trying to stitch together his complicated relationships, investigators are left with three women who just might've had the motive to kill.

In terms of non-fiction, I loved Real Estate by Deborah Levy and The Devil You Know by Gwen Adshead and Eileen Horne. Cain’s crime noirs weren’t packed with amiable people and cheery settings, but it’s the very operatic obsessiveness of his corrupt characters, the intensity of his dead-end settings and over-the-top dialogue that make masterpieces like “Double Indemnity” and “The Postman Always Rings Twice” irresistible. A Slow Fire Burning is an atmospheric, suspenseful, psychotic thriller that will have you gripping the edge of your seat. The night Daniel died, Carla picked up Theo’s kitchen knife and one of his scarves and walked to Daniel’s to discuss the graphic novel. A modern alternative to SparkNotes and CliffsNotes, SuperSummary offers high-quality Study Guides that feature detailed chapter summaries and analysis of major themes, characters, quotes, and essay topics.her follow-up, Into the Water, was a much quieter release, and wasn't even a mystery, IMO; it was a character-driven investigation of a situation that happened to have a body count, in a similar vein to ivy pochoda's exquisite These Women. This is where King has always excelled, depicting the small kindnesses, cruelties and tensions that make up ordinary life. When Theo sees the notebook revealing Daniel’s potential role in Ben’s death, and knowing that Carla has already seen it, he goes to the police and confesses to having killed Daniel. How about Carla, Daniel’s estranged aunt and the well-to-do ex-wife of plagiarising bestselling crime author Theo Myerson?

When he brings his find to the new head, it turns out she has a story of her own to tell, one of a brother who vanished years ago and of murder and ambition. This can be an effective storytelling device, but in this case, waiting for the private investigator heroine to get to where the reader is at the beginning of the story feels interminable. She doesn’t tell the police that a girl named Laura also visited and must have dropped her key near the body. A Slow Fire Burning (2021) is a contemporary murder mystery novel written by British novelist Paula Hawkins. Pike makes deft work of these unreliable narrators who span several generations, imbuing their voices with a defensiveness and vulnerability born from past disappointments and trauma. Paula Hawkins's newest thriller A Slow Fire Burning follows the same highly engaging page-turning format as her previous hit The Girl on the Train, but this book is much, much more sinister, suspenseful, and downright jaw-dropping in all the right ways.
