In Skylanders: Trap Team, a new portal dubbed the Traptanium Portal was created to include the Portal Villain Vault and a Trap slot for capturing Villains as well as use them in battle. The portal also has a built-in speaker where captured villains can talk through. This portal is very flat and has a blue ring acting as a railing. Xbox 360 and Xbox One systems are known to only work with their own designated portals and cannot use any portals from any other platform at all nor can their portals be used with any other platforms either. In Spyro's Adventure and Giants, The dramatic, ethereal music that plays when the Portal of Power is empty is an epically slowed-down version of music that would normally play on that level. More importantly, the more you play, the more Imaginite you find in chests and as rewards from challenges. From the start, there's a good pool of a few dozen heads, chests, arms, and legs, but you can expand that into hundreds by playing and finding Imaginite. Imaginite also adds to your selection of equipment, personalities, and sound effects.

SuperChargers was the first to break this rule, with its figures only being compatible with SuperChargers (and the later game Imaginators) despite having figures of some of the same characters from earlier games. This is because even though the characters themselves were familiar faces from previous games, their SuperChargers figures actually had redesigned skill trees, and in some cases completely different play styles than their earlier games' versions. Instead, his "Series 2" figure came in the fourth game, Trap Team, as Sure Shot Shroomboom. So for this character, if you have the "Series 2" version of his figure from Trap Team, using the rule of thumb, since his "Series 1" debut was in Giants, his "Series 2" Trap Team figure is compatible with Giants, Swap Force, Trap Team, and later games. Searching for the Activision logo etched into the underside of a figure is the most reliable way of confirming that you are looking at a Skylanders figure when in doubt, and applies to every figure in the franchise, not strictly SuperChargers vehicles. Most figures, but not all, will have their in-game element symbol etched there as well.

The Spyro's Adventure/Giants portal has a limit of up to 4 pieces that can be read simultaneously. For example; two players can each play a Swap Force figure in Superchargers when using the older portals, but because a Swap Force Skylander count as two pieces, that means the players won't be able to use a physical vehicle as a result. Instead they'll have to summon a digital vehicle. SWAP Force Skylanders as well as their swapped combinations can be used with the original portals from Spyro's Adventure and Giants, this however only works in SuperChargers and Imaginators. The reason is because the original portals could only read up to 4 individual pieces (SWAP Force Skylanders being considered as two separate pieces), and Magic Items are no longer as useful in those games as they were in previous games.
