About this deal

In line with current health and safety guidelines, we reserve the right to refuse any items that are (for whatever reason) not returned to us in a clean and hygienic condition. Mostly, I tend to keep the torch in reactive mode, and switched between the three levels. With this, I found the battery life to be very impressive. The Lithium-Ion rechargeable battery is powerful and helps to stop single-use batteries from being wasted. If you are running with someone else wearing a head torch, the Swift reduces its beam. I guess it thinks that between the two of you there is enough light for you both to run. Except, this is not the case. I like my own full beam to light my way and I don’t want to have to rely on someone else’s beam. The NAO RL is a really interesting development, because it's a little less like the NAO we once knew (which, compared to this, looks incredibly old and clunky) and bears a much greater resemblance to the IKO (albeit significantly more supercharged). Interestingly I was a bit indifferent about the IKO, but I think it's interesting what Petzl have done, drawing upon its design and technology, then applying it within a larger and more powerful headtorch.

Petzl Swift RL head torch review: a bewilderingly bright - T3

I ended up on a number of occasions “sharing” the beams of the dimmed Swift RL and the lower lumen output of a friend’s head torch. The Swfit is said to be “weather resistant”. This is not waterproof although I have taken the torch out in Scottish rain and it seems to remain operative. Fortunately, our concern was pretty short-lived, because once we started testing the Swift RL, the improvements and upgrades became obvious. In general terms, it’s lighter weight, brighter, smarter and rides more comfortably on your head than the old Reactik+. It also helped get us through a recent 100-miler – more on that in a moment.

The Petzl Swift RL is claimed to be an improved and simplified – head torch. It includes three standard light beams output up to a maximum of 550 lumens and three “reactive” beams up to 900 lumens. The Swift RL is home to a Lithium-Ion 2350 mAh battery, something that can be recharged via the type B micro USB port. You can also keep an eye on this via the product’s battery charge indicator.

Petzl Swift RL head torch for runners and walkers Review: Petzl Swift RL head torch for runners and walkers

We will keep customer information safe and secure and will not distribute or sell this information to a third party. The complexity of testing the exact timings of the SWIFT's burn time because of RL don't necessarily make this aspect of testing any easier, but having put the SWIFT's battery in the freezer overnight its power was seemingly unaffected (or, if it was, then it was barely noticeable). As such, this should allay the fears of anyone looking to use the SWIFT RL through the colder and more miserable months of the year (which just happen to be the darker months of the year too). Its compact and ultra-lightweight SHELL LT storage bag can also transform the headlamp into a lantern. In truth, and from what I have discovered when discussing the reactive technology with others, I think the reactive beam is far better for solo running or when you are walking. The pace of walking means that if the beam dims it is not so much of an issue compared to running. When running I usually require a bright beam to show me the way ahead.
