About this deal

I normally dislike historical fiction with an alternating future perspective uncovering what we're already being told by the historical perspective. Based on the premise which only mentioned Dikembe and Lowra as children, I didn't expect that to be the case here, but it was. I didn't enjoy Lowra's adult perspective very much and tended to skim through those sections. I think the book would have been more effective if it focused mainly on the two protagonists as children and developing their parallels and differences that way instead of making everything glaringly obvious through Lowra's adult perspective. The Yates family are seen to be doing the contest for the pizza party, however, the Yates stated in " Future Tense" that they don't do dairy. However, some of the pizza may have not had cheese or had low-lactose cheese. Lincoln tries to help Lola, but Lola, not wanting to continue reading, tries to evade Lincoln, eventually getting into a scuffle. During their fighting, Lola reveals that she finds it difficult to read. When Lincoln questions her, Lola explains that though she can read a little, she has trouble with learning how to read more and that was why she didn't want to participate in the reading contest. Feeling sympathetic for Lola, Lincoln decides to help Lola learn how to read, to which she's grateful for. In the study room, Lincoln teaches Lola how to properly pronounce specific words. Two and a half hours later, Lola successfully reads the entire book, but the moment she and Lincoln exit, the family angrily confronts them, saying they missed the deadline. Lincoln attempts to take the blame to spare Lola, but Lola decides to step in, admitting to the rest of the family that she had trouble with reading before, but with Lincoln's help, she realizes that reading is not as hard as she thought it was, and now she has a newfound interest. Now knowing the whole story, the family forgives Lola and apologizes as well for forcing her to read in the first place, and for not helping her to learn either. We’re going to live happily ever after, Mum and Auntie Barbara and Kendall and me. Fingers crossed.” Despite having gone through so much with Lola leaving her dad and her mum having cancer, this quote shows that there is always hope and that you must always remain positive and have a positive outlook on life. There is no point in dwelling on your sorrows and making others around you suffer to be miserable, positivity is key and no matter what life throws at us we all need to remember nothing lasts forever.

Personally, I thought that for all her flaws, Nikki/Victoria was a sympathetic character. She, Jayni/Lola Rose, and Kenny/Kendall obviously love and care for each other and that makes you want the three of them to have a happy ending. As with The Illustrated Mum, Lola Rose is a book that still has the ability to pull at my heartstrings even though I’ve read it many times. However, it is possible because the librarian at first forgot to quiz Lola when quizzing the family. The book rolls along at a good pace until the cancer stuff, and then it speeds up and it's sort of hard to tell how many days have gone by. And while there was a real sense of fear set up and well timed with the abuse bit (worrying he'd find them, connecting him with a shark, and so on) the cancer part fell a bit flat. Later on, the family arrives to the library, and tell the librarian about the amount of books they read. Impressed at how many books they've read, the librarian makes them take a quiz to make sure they actually did read the books. The librarian takes a book, asks a question pertaining to a specific plot point, and the family answers the questions. The family manages to complete the quiz with flying colors, but when Lola is asked a question related to the princess book she reluctantly agreed to read, she gives off an incorrect answer, resulting in the entire family getting disqualified. Unhappy with their loss, Lincoln reminds them that the contest deadline is at 5:00, and it's only 3:00. He says that he'll use the next two hours to teach Lola how to read so they can get a second chance at the quiz. Accepting the offer, the family drives off, while Lincoln and Lola stay behind.Lola keeps a basketball card of Manu Ginobili, a shooting guard for the San Antonio Spurs, in her purse. Lola said that it's too hard for her to read, But she has no problem reading Lincoln's coffee note that says "World's Best Dad!" in " Ties That Bind". It is revealed in this episode that Lola can't read very well; though, she learns how to read better in this episode.

Before Daffy asks Bugs "What is the speed limit in a residential area?", he's the only person at the testing station. After Bugs refuses to help Daffy cheat, an old lady is seen taking the test who wasn't there before. The way this story is told in such a raw yet accessible manner with two children, Lowra an orphan raised with privilege and Dikembe or Celestine as he is later known after his name was stolen from him, experiencing being trapped in an attic nearly a century apart but bound by the same secrets really captivates the reader.

The book that Lori read, Rumor Has It, would later have its title repurposed as that of a Season 5 episode. Lola: A right? Pfft. Yose-mite, I just got a perfect score on my written test. I think I can do a little more than take a right. Nikki/Victoria is not a great mum. Her biggest flaw is that she needs to have a man in her life to feel complete – the reason why she stayed with an abusive spouse and the reason behind some of her more maddening decisions after they leave. But, she’s not completely hopeless. After all, the entire reason that they leave is because Jay, the abusive spouse/father, hit Jayni/Lola Rose for the first time. And apart from her deep-seated need to have a man around, she’s not that bad of a mum. She knows that she can do better but she is trying and does her best to take care of their emotional and physical needs. Jayni/Lola Rose might have been parentified because of her mum’s fatal flaw, but she has a mum who is trying.

Lola: I can't go to jail! I'm too pretty! I won't last a day. No wait, I'll work out, I'll get really muscular. ( lowers voice) My voice will get really deep. I'll run the place. ( rolls down window) Hi, officer. If this sounds too "newagy" for you, close your eyes and breathe in and out slowly ten times and think about something wonderful that makes you happy. I have to say, I really respect Wilson as an author, because I don't know anyone else who takes serious topics and turns them into novels that are easy and engaging for children/young teens to understand. And not just young teenagers - I'm fifteen, yet I'm still reading it! She's a brilliant writer, and she manages to create these amazing and very different characters - no two are alike. So I think that even though children may not completely understand these issues, the characters and storyline are enough to attract them. The story focuses on Jayni, her mother and her brother as they try to escape her abusive father. The issue is handled with care by Wilson, but is (as always) realistic. There are many twists and turns throughout the story however one message is clear by the end: there is nothing more important than family. This is illustrated by the reunion of Jayni's mother and her aunt who Jayni hasn't seen since she was little.

Daffy: Towed?! But, I'm just an innocent school girl and this is my baby brother. ( looks toward Bugs) Put on the diaper! Ahora disponible en español! Lola, la famosa amante de los libros, vuelve a aparecer con mascota en la quinta aventura de la serie Lola lee.

Jacqueline Wilson is an author that I avidly read as a child. There was not a book of hers that I had not read. I keenly remember Lola Rose being my favourite at the time. I decided that as an adult I was going to restart my collection and reread each one to see how I felt as an adult. I distinctly remember Wilson discussing important topics in each of her books which is something that interests me even more now I am an adult. Every now and then I read a book that I feel changes my life in some way, I'm not the same person before I read it as I am after. I don't know if that sounds silly but I guess I've always been a sentimental type of person. The Attic Child had such a profound effect on me it's not only one of my favourite books of the year but of all time. I’ve said this before and I’ll say it again: I’ll always be jealous of authors who can use words to captivate you in ways you never imagined! This one has been immediately added to my favorite books of 2022 for how amazing it was! Lola Rose is no exception to key important themes being discussed. Key themes include; domestic violence, poverty and cancer. Very strong subjects that may affect children and young people, but subjects that they may not actually know a lot about. Domestic violence affects thousands of families on a daily basis, Jacqueline Wilson explores this topic sensitively and through the eyes of a child witnessing the abuse. She puts out the message that this is not okay, and that there is a way out if this happens. I really liked the way that Wilson approached this subject.Lola: Did I pass? Hellooo? (Write the score for herself) Yeah, I passed. Ohhh. Now I know why you look familiar. You're Bugs neighbor. He took me so much about you. He's not a fan. I can't believe they named a National Park after that guy.
