About this deal

Glamour: ★★★☆☆. The Dualit features a very similar design to other cheaper models in this run-down, but includes patented technology to make a great frothy hot chocolate. Our expert found the the machine an absolute doddle to use and it was nice and quiet. It also performed consistently, crafting creamy drinks time and time again. This makes it ideal for dinner parties or family treats. In fact, a round of the salted caramel hot chocolate would make the perfect finale for any cold weather gathering. Effortlessness: ★★★☆☆. The instructions are quite complicated, and to make hot chocolate, you need to remove the lid one minute into the operation to add the cocoa powder. Smeg Milk Frother and Hot Chocolate Maker - a great gift idea, a huge talking point and eye-catching centre piece on the kitchen counter. Taste: ★★★★☆. This gadget makes a nice, creamy textured hot chocolate. It might not be as hot as you'd like, though.

When you drink is ready, pour left- or right-handed into your favourite mug and enjoy a barista-quality frothed hot chocolate.Tassimo’s other chocolatey guest brands sound more promising – Cadbury, Milka and Suchard offer compatible pods – but it was too painful to figure out, too potentially disappointing to taste and, mostly, too much landfill to bin to try again.

Effortlessness: ★★☆☆☆. Making hot chocolate and cleaning-up afterwards just feels like hard work. It's a labour-intensive method, too.

Lakeland Milk Frother and Hot Chocolate Maker

Effortlessness: ★★★★☆. This manual kitchen gadget requires about 10 seconds of shaking. It's nowhere near as vigorous as I imagined when I read up about the product, but there's still movement required which may mean some people with arm and shoulder weaknesses or injuries might struggle with the motion. Cons: Its design won't suit every kitchen; it's chunky; it can't handle chocolate other than in powdered form. Versatility: ★★★★★. The hob, saucepan, and whisk can all be used to produce other wonderful things, like sauces and gravies, hot milk, custard, and oodles of other tasty treats. In fact, I didn’t get straight chocolate: I got Oreo. If you are going to use a machine that makes a hot drink with opaque plastic pods and a tankful of water, why not go full tilt? Also, this summer’s heatwave led to my five-year-old discovering Oreo ice-creams and, if I’m honest, they are not half bad. Unfortunately, the same could not be said for the hot chocolate version. It was disgusting. For barista-grade hot chocolate, the Velvetiser Hot Chocolate Maker makes indulgent hot chocolate in just 2 and a half minutes. Using flakes of real chocolate from Hotel Chocolat, add this and your choice of milk or water to the Velvetiser and let it do its thing! The innovative velvetising process whips up your drink to make rich and fluffy cloud-like drinks.

Effortlessness: ★★☆☆☆. You need to watch it for the duration it is in the microwave, then you need to stir like mad to try and blend everything. There's less washing-up than with a saucepan though. So, if you're after tight microfoam and decent creaminess, then cow's milk is the way to go. However, if you like the sweetness that comes with oat milk and plentiful froth, then oat is a great alternative. Is the Velvetiser the same as a milk frother?Cons: Chocolate struggles to melt properly, and stirring with a spoon or tiny whisk doesn't allow it to combine into a silky drink. Versatility: ★★★★☆. This machine can make frothed milk for various coffees as well as hot chocolate. It can only make one cup at a time, though.

All in all, this is a hot drink delight that’s perfect for serious hot chocolate fans or anyone looking to add a touch of cosy finesse to a winter dinner party. In the market for a Christmas present for a loved one? The Velvetiser would be at the very top of our list for sweet tooths. Anyone for a hot cocoa?Just choose your flavour. Add our flakes of real chocolate to your choice of dairy, plant milk or water. Then press the button and let the patented velvetising process deliver luxurious cloud-like chocolate velvet. In the spirit of creating less work for ourselves when making hot chocolate, I've only considered gadgets and machines that can handle milk AND that can melt down chocolate, ideally blending the pair to a smooth consistency. I've omitted pod machines, novelty gadgets like battery powered whisks, commercial grade machines, and repurposed cafetieres (termed 'Chocolatieres'). Compact, fuss-free, easy-to-use gadgets that convert milk and chocolate into a steaming hot chocolate is the name of the game here. We also measured how long each milk frother takes to heat up 180ml of oat milk and semi-skimmed milk, and if it heated to an appropriate temperature for drinking coffee and hot chocolate. As for clean-up, Rob praised the Dualit for being "fairly easy" - the device just needs a rinse and the whisk and lid can go in the dishwasher. Value for money: Looking at the price point and quality of results, we evaluated whether the milk frother felt like a good investment.
