About this deal

This book is perhaps a must-read for those interested in autonomous AI. The central question is: "how do we probe the mind of a bee to figure out what's going on?" Does knowing the code of an AI exempt us from this kind of study? One bee, Flora 717, rebels against a totalitarian state in Laline Paull's debut dystopian novel set in a beehive. A beautiful kid's educational book about bees with a crucial message: not only does it inform and educate about an issue that is a real threat, but it also delivers it in a way that is gripping for all ages.

Bees pollinate plants, produce honey, and create marvellous social colonies. They also need our help. Honey bees have had a close relationship with humans for thousands of years, but they are endangered due to over-domestication. Seeley gives a view of many still living free in the wild, providing a model of their healthy lives. A must-read for anyone interested in the fascinating social behavior of this species, and for those who keep honey bees for fun or profit."—Bernd Heinrich, author of The Hot-Blooded Insects Bees may visit upwards towards 1000 flowers and each flower has it's unique mechanics in respect to the location of nectar and the perils that may befall one who is not knowledgeable. Discover more about our fuzzy little insect friends with award-winning author and illustrator Charlotte Milner.

Seeley brings us dispatches from the cutting-edge scientific hive-mind exploring the complex behavioral, social, and survival dynamics of bee colonies."—Olivia Rutigliano, LitHub There is nothing quite like a bee, and nothing quite like The Bee Book. This essential guide to all things apiary takes you into the hive and reveals the remarkable lives of these essential pollinators, from their incredible influence on the evolution of flowers to the role of an individual worker bee within her colony. Bee species have existed for millions of years - but, as a result of pesticides and the climate crisis, their numbers are now threatened like never before. Written for experts, beekeepers and biology buffs alike. Seeley’s fifth book on bees illuminates why wild honeybees across the planet are thriving while managed colonies are under threat."—Krishna Ramanujan, Cornell Chronicle When I was a teenager this was among the first books I read about insects. It instilled the notion that insects were much more interesting than plants, and prompted me to take an apiculture course in college as well as to do a special study on honey bee ocelot." – recommended by Eric Grissell

What do they do all day? Why are bees important? Find out why they need our help and what you can do.Chittka makes a convincing argument for individual variability in bees personalities and why and how their choices may be affected by their size, which correlates to how much they were fed as larvae, and any other predispositions that make them better at one task or another, or more or less adventurous and relentless in their pursuit of pollen and nectar, and even their preference for one or the other. The experiments to study the bees' behaviour were really interesting. You'd think it would be easier to confuse a bee so they'd get a little lost, but they haven't been getting enough credit for how good they are at navigating the world. A wonderful read. This is an excellent book, and one I would recommend to all beekeepers, not to mention anyone with a fascination for this amazing little insect."—Amanda Williams, Buzz About Bees A nicely presented book for older children. It gives an account of some of the problems facing honey bees, especially in the US. recommended by Karin Alton First off - there were very few photos of insects in this book. Insects are cool, but seeing them up close (esp. with extreme magnification of compound eyes) gives me the heebies.
