Lastly, I’ll add – because this thing goes to so many places you’ll never expect (even if you think you’ve predicted events), the ending is amazing. Like, had me stunned and smiling that Shine decided to go there and give us this terrifying ending. Loved it. As unique as all of James Howe's writing is, The Watcher is probably the most unusual story that he has ever written. It proceeds with all the visceral haze of a dream, yet at the same time powerfully thrusts itself into the reader's heart and mind, hardly allowing one time to ponder what is happening. In fact, through most of the book's plot the reader probably won't understand what is going on in the shadowy depths beneath the mysterious surface. All that is completely evident is that the ostensibly unrelated lives of these young beach goers are bound together by the ties of pain and loneliness, and there is no better writer at empathizing with and sensitively rendering that kind of pain than the inimitable James Howe.

Unfortunately I never felt I got a satisfactory explanation for any of these queries and events only continued to become more fast-paced and convoluted, right up until the novel's close. I can definitely say this is a read like no other but also that I anticipated something more concrete from my time with it. This book is labelled as a horror novel, but it really isn’t. Yes it has a couple of horrific scenes and is pretty disturbing throughout, but it’s definitely leaning more towards the fast-paced thriller label. This was a really fun book to get carried away with, totally unputdownable! I’m certainly going to keep my eyes peeled for more of Armstrong’s writing in the future.This book is about a girl who has a very woeful life. Instead of going out and enjoying her ownlife, she would go to the beach continously to observe other people's life. Then she would write down what she saw and start to write about her own ideal family. It is obvious that something had happened to her. And from her actions, it is also clear that she really wanted to have a happy life with her family, but yet, she is unable to do that. I will state up front that this book is amazing. It is nothing like what I was expecting. The synopsis above doesn’t do the book justice; there’s just so much going on that it’s hard to put into words. A couple’s dream home turns into a total nightmare in Netflix’s The Watcher. The limited series, from creator Ryan Murphy, is based on a true story that is almost too horrifying to believe. This felt like something a little different, in terms of its writing style and interesting storyline. The story is told from the perspective of Lily, through her journal-style entries she's writing to someone - we're not sure who for most of the novel - and so we see her thoughts, feelings and actions in her own voice. This voice tells the story in quite an odd narrative style, using very short, often disjointed sentences, and though I know this is Lily's voice, it really made me feel a bit bewildered at points. This really adds to the unsettling (and at times, downright bizarre!) style of the story! Readers are ultimately offered a resolution, which was okay, though I’m not a fan of the ubiquitous pre-conclusion scuffle / crisis we so often find in thrillers.Months later, the Broadduses were able to rent out the home, but shortly after the new family moved in, The Watcher sent another letter. It was dated February 13, which was the same day the Broadduses gave a deposition in a legal complaint they filed in June 2015 against the home’s previous owners The Woodses, who they claimed should have warned them about The Watcher. (The complaint was later dismissed by a judge.) “You wonder who The Watcher is? Turn around idiots,” read the letter, which arrived two and a half years after the Broadduses bought the home. “Maybe you even spoke to me, one of the so-called neighbors who has no idea who The Watcher could be. Or maybe you do know and are too scared to tell anyone. Good move.” I found Lily to be a very captivating character. As the story is told solely from her POV, you get a direct perspective of how she views things. Not only this, but we also catch a glimpse of the inner workings of her mind. Her thoughts, eccentricities and the like. I also found her to be pretty quirky and liked her dry sense of humour.

Evan goes on an adventure to see who this girl is. The girl uses the people she sees in real life and makes them into fictional characters in her own story. Filled with suspense and mystery, I just couldn’t put this book down until I knew what was going on and believe me when I say Shine keeps you waiting!
