The Insta360 Go 3 is an ingenious camera. It’s well made and easy to use, and the design is impressively versatile. Image quality is pretty good, too and it’s stuffed with clever shooting modes. The GO 3, when placed in the Action Pod, bears a strong resemblance to a GoPro, right down to the graphical user interface. Now the main selling point of the Go 3 is that you can use a number of magnetized and threaded Insta360 accessories to mount the action cam in several different ways, but the best accessory of all (if you can even call it that) is the Action Pod.

The Go 3 camera is charged via the Action Pod, and the Action Pod is charged via the USB Type-C connector. It supports QC and PD fast charging. Max charging power is around 10-11W. It takes just over an hour to fully charge it. The red indicator lights up when it’s charging and it turns off when it’s charged. The GO 3 has been designed with a large battery, letting you shoot for up to 60% longer than the previous GO 2. With 45 minutes of run time on its own or 173 minutes of run time when paired with the Action Pod.

By itself, the Go 3 camera has an IPX8 waterproof rating, which means you can use it for snorkeling or swimming at depths of up to 16 feet (5 meters). The IPX4-rated Action Pod housing is fine to use in the rain but isn't submersible. It measures 1.9 by 2.5 by 1.2 inches and weighs 3.4 ounces.

Battery life isn’t the Go 3’s most impressive attribute. The camera itself offers only around 45 minutes of 1080p recording time when flying solo; things get a lot better when embedded in the Action Pod, with 170 minutes available.

One major upgrade in the Go 3 is its extended battery life. The camera itself can record continuously for 45 to 60 minutes, almost 50% longer than its predecessor, the Go 2. If you place the camera in the action pod, you can stretch your recording time up to 150 to 170 minutes, while simultaneously recharging the camera. The FreeFrame capture is great for social footage, and the versatility of magnetic mounting and wireless control via the ActionPod makes the Insta360 Go 3 powerful even if its resolutions can't best the competition On the camera, you’ll find a screen, a power button, and a mode-switching button, which make navigating the menu a breeze. Another shared feature is voice command support, enabling easy control of the camera without needing to physically interact with it. The additional 1270mAh battery in the Action Pod extends the camera’s battery life to up to 170 minutes. The Action Pod's touch controls were also intuitive, borrowing the menu system from other Insta360 action cameras and tuning it to the Go 3's capabilities. Within the settings, I was able to do things on the touch display that I couldn't do in the smartphone app, such as turn off the LED light on the front of the camera and mute the beeping noise. For one, both the Go 3 and Action Pod tend to get a little toasty. I thought this might just be during video capture, but even when idle, the gear was warm to the touch. And yeah, I get it: small camera, small battery, lots of data to process. I guess my concern is how much of a power drain an overworked Go 3 and Action Pod could be in the long run. Could this affect processing power? That's hard to say, although I'll admit that my own Go 3 rig was snappy and responsive when starting and stopping a recording. My other concern is overall stabilization.

But the size of the GO3 is noticeably smaller than the GoPro Hero 11 even with the action pod, not to mention the GO3 can be removed and it’s super portable and convenient to use.The Action Pad has been created with a flip touch screen, allowing you to take perfectly framed selfies and enjoy accurate handheld shooting. Stills are captured in default mode which supports RAW photos, or PureShot HDR mode and there's also Night Shot and StarLapse capture too. Generally speaking, if you've got your phone to hand, as with lowlight video, it will outperform the Go 3 for photos too. At a minimum, you should probably go for the mid-range spec, which will get you the same processor, but with 8GB of RAM and an actual SSD – with 128GB of storage. Not only should you have 8GB of RAM at a minimum with Windows 11, but that SSD is going to load programs so much faster than the eMMC drive found in the starting tier. Insta360 says that software optimizations and a resolution upgrade to 2.7K results in crisp, clear videos. Additionally, there are no clip length limitations and a larger 310mAh battery allows it to shoot continuously for 45 minutes — a 50% increase compared to the previous generation. New recording modes are also present, including Pre-recording, Loop Recording and Timed Capture. The last feature allows the camera to be set to start recording at a specific time — particularly helpful for early-morning timelapses.
