Anamorphic 4K] 3328x2496 (4:3) 50.00p, 200Mbps (4:2:0 10-bit LongGOP)* (H.265/HEVC, LPCM) *HLG is selectable. But now the S5 Mark II includes a spread of phase-detect autofocus points which hope to lay those demons to rest, and in a bold move, Panasonic invited a load of YouTubers including myself to Japan to try it out, before sending us home with the camera for long-term testing. And now the same pan but with using the electronic shutter where the tell-tale skewing artefacts of rolling shutter have become apparent with the tower and buildings leaning to the side. One of the key photo highlights of the S5 II over its rivals is the High Resolution Mode which captures a series of eight images using the electronic shutter, with IBIS subtly shifting the sensor between each. These are then combined afterwards to deliver an image with reduced colour moire artefacts as well as potentially higher resolution.

If you’re shooting static subjects in Single AFS mode, the Lumix S5 II increases its speed a little to 9fps. I slightly exceeded Panasonic’s quoted speeds in my tests, shooting 246 JPEGs at 9.5fps with single autofocus or 168 JPEGs at 7.7fps with continuous autofocus. The camera was happy to keep shooting beyond these totals, I just got bored and let go. The S5 shares many video features with the S1H, adds some creative photo modes for stills shooters and gets an updated DFD autofocus system. The speed drops to 8fps when shooting compressed RAW onto SD, and slows further to 6fps if you switch to uncompressed or lossless compressed RAW on any card type.If you're working in Raw format, you can mostly ignore the profile selections because you can tune color, exposure, and contrast to taste. I processed S5 II photos in Adobe Lightroom Classic and was quite happy with the editing flexibility. Shadows push without adding excessive noise and there's plenty of room to pull in highlights. The S5 II is strong when it comes to capturing dynamic range, almost matching the class-leading Z6 II throughout the tested sensitivity range. At high ISOs the Panasonic can capture as much as 2EV more dynamic range than the Canon and Sony cameras. This is Panasonic's most compact full-frame camera to date. See what's different about it, and why it will get even better through firmware. Further stabilization can be called upon in the form of Boost I.S. and E-Stabilization. E-stabilization incurs a slight crop. Boost I.S. is the most aggressive form of stabilization and will produce a look similar to using a tripod when shooting handheld. It’s not ideal for capturing video while moving the camera as it will cause sudden judders as the camera counters your movement to keep the frame steady.

While Fujifilm now offers a similar Pixel Shift mode on its recent X-Series bodies, the S5 becomes quite unique amongst its full-frame rivals. Sony doesn’t start offering Pixel Shift until the pricier A7R series, while Canon doesn’t have it at all. Eagle-eyed viewers may notice some vents on either side of the viewfinder head, positioned towards the bottom and hidden a little by the dials on either side. These work alongside an internal fan to provide active cooling that allows the camera to shoot video for longer under hotter conditions, and is another unique capability in this category. Panasonic assures me they don’t compromise the weatherproofing, but time will of course tell. Oh and in day to day use, the fan is effectively inaudible and I never experienced overheating. Stereo/Lens Auto/Shotgun/Super Shotgun/Manual is selectable when attaching DMW-MS2 (sold separately). The S5 II uses a 24MP BSI CMOS sensor with 5-axis stabilization, in line with similarly-priced cameras like the Nikon Z 6 II and Sony a7C. The sensor supports a native ISO 100-51200 sensitivity range, and offers extended settings down to ISO 50 and up to ISO 204800. You can set the camera to snap 8-bit JPGs or 14-bit Raw photos, but Panasonic doesn't include 10-bit HEIF support despite that format's increasing popularity on hybrid cameras. Sigma 60-600mm Sports, 186mm, f/8, 1/200-second, ISO 320Dynamic range is measured in EV (exposure values, or 'stops'). It's a measure of the camera's ability to record detail in extremely bright and dark areas of the scene. The higher the value, the better. Hoxton: the EVF in general still has a way to go to become attractive to me. I held and fondled the Leica SL once in my local shop, and that EVF was a lot better than its competitors at the time, but still... Maybe I should have got one instead of my current D850, haha.

The body of the Lumix S5II is water resistant so can survive a spell of bad weather and keep going (Image credit: Jon Devo) Slot 1: Compatible with UHS-I/UHS-II UHS Speed Class 3 standard SDHC/SDXC Memory Cards and UHS-II Video Speed Class 90 standard SDXC Memory Cards. Dual-band Wi-Fi 5 (802.11ac) and Bluetooth 5 are also on board. The former enables file transfer and remote operations via the Panasonic Lumix Sync mobile app (available for Android and iOS), while the latter speeds up the pairing process for wireless remotes. For example, Canon and Sony simply have one option for humans, with a separate option for animals. Sony has a third option specifically for birds, while Canon is the only one of these three rivals to have an additional option for vehicles. Simply choose the one for the desired subject.Recording stops when the continuous recording time exceeds 30 minutes in [C4K/60p] [C4K/50p] [4K/60p] [4K/50p] [4K-A/50p] [C4K/4:2:2 10-bit] [4K/4:2:2 10-bit] [4K-A/4:2:2 10-bit] [4K/4:2:0 10-bit] [4K-A/4:2:0 10-bit] [S&Q]. You’ll also notice the extra width of its viewfinder hump, expanded to house an all-new cooling system for the LUMIX S5 II. This helps to deliver practically unlimited recording in all modes. It does add some additional weight and size to the body, which is up 26g from 714g to 740g and it’s now fractionally taller by 5.2mm. So now here’s some tests in Continuous AFC mode, where you can now record the HDMI output of the S5 II without compromising the performance. I’m starting with the Lumix S 50mm at f1.8 and with Face and Eye detection where you’ll see Panasonic’s unique cross-hair graphics. Unfortunately, people hoping that a firmware upgrade could deliver similar focusing performance in older LUMIX cameras will be left disappointed. The LUMIX S5 II uses an entirely new image sensor and processor, which combine to deliver faster data readouts and utilize more sophisticated algorithms. The new imaging system at the core of the S5 II delivers on most of its intended promises, in full.
