Exit Pupil: Magnification and the size of the objective lens determines the size of the exit pupil. You can see the exit pupil by holding the binoculars at arm's length and looking at the eyepiece. That round dot of light is the exit pupil. To compute the exit pupil, you divide the diameter of the objective lens in millimeters by the magnification. For our 8X42 binoculars, we would divide the objective lens 42mm by the magnification 8, or 42/8 for an exit pupil of 5.25. If we look at a pair of compact binoculars, say a pair of 8x25, we would have an exit pupil of 8/25=3.125. Eye relief – the distance between your eyes and the magnification lenses, which are the lenses you look through (measured in millimetres). Most binoculars have twisting eyecups that give you extra eye relief if you're not wearing glasses. Those wearing glasses shouldn't need to use the eyecups. You've probably noticed that most binoculars are described by two numbers separated by an x, 8x42, for example. That first number is the magnification (more on that in a second), and the second number is the size (in millimeters) of the objective (front) lens. The size of the objective lens largely determines the overall size of the binoculars, so that second number essentially describes their size. These thinner lens elements have been placed closer together within the barrel resulting in a high-quality pair of binoculars that measure just 144mm in length and weigh only 640g. That’s up to 30% lighter than other comparable binoculars.

With the lightweight construction of the CL Companion binoculars and the impeccable build quality, you can be sure your investment will withstand the test of time, which is what you would expect as these are far from cheap. But I say you get what you pay for and the optical quality of these binoculars is possibly the best on the market. They're compact, ergonomically designed, and of rugged construction that prevents any ingress from water if submerged at a depth of one meter for five minutes. Close-up performance is also impressive, with the ability to view subjects as near as 1.5m. turn-and-slide rubber eyecups - turn-and-slide rubber eyecups allow users to adjust the eye-relief for a custom fit-providing a full field of view and maximum comfort during extended periods of use. Weatherproofing: There are two types of designations commonly used when talking about weatherproofing. The differences are: a weather-resistant optic will withstand the occasional light shower but will not withstand submersion or extended use in wet conditions. weatherproof or waterproof optics means that the optics shouldn't allow water intrusion under most circumstances. Sometimes they are even rated to a depth of submersion for a period of time. Some manufacturers will even have an IP (International Protection) Rating. Binoculars with external focusing are sealed with an "o" ring, and over time these can wear, dry out, or get damaged. The result is that moisture or dust can get into the interior, settle on the optics, and degrade your view. If you're looking for the best optical quality binoculars that are also lightweight for carrying long distances, and that let you see your observations from a far distance, these are possibly the best compact binoculars you can buy, and I've tested a few! When choosing a pair of binoculars, you are faced with making compromises. Binoculars that you use for astronomy will not be compact, and you probably won't take them hiking. Below are some things to consider based on use: Hiking/Travel Their technical abilities include an impressive field of view up to 140 metres@1000metres and a close focusing distance of just 1.5 meters for those observations a little closer to home. Their exceptional colour reproduction makes it possible to reliably identify species across the entire focus-range. We selected bestselling binoculars for bird-watching from popular brands and retailers to be put through our tough tests. We buy every product we test.

Magnification is how large the image will be through the binoculars vs. your naked eye. In the example of 8x42, an image would be eight times larger than what you would normally see. Magnification also impacts the depth of field, your field of view, and the overall brightness of the image. Magnification also magnifies movement. The higher the power, the harder it is to hold steady. Above 10x, you will probably need a tripod system. We discuss the depth of field and field of view in more detail below. ergonomic rubber armored body design - a lightweight, ergonomic body design makes the binoculars enjoyable to hold for long periods of time. the central focus knob is intuitive to operate and is very user friendly. built to handle any environment, the binos has a rubber-armored coating to withstand extreme use and provide a non-slip grip, even in the wettest conditions.Perfect binoculars for every adventure: a great match for everyone from beginners to mid-range outdoors and birding enthusiasts. the perfect combination of premium build, portability, and price The convenient proportion between objective aperture and magnification makes observations during dawn phasespossible. Diopter adjustmentand foldable rubberized eyecupsare included. The handy and touch-proofed surface of the BRESSER Hunter 8x40provides a comfortable grip. The tripod connectionis standardized for these models.

This means that for your hobby or subject, it's worth thinking about what the best combination of magnification of objective lens size will work for you. Length x width x depth: 140mm x 118mm x 52 mm (fully opened) Warranty: 10 years Supplied with: Padded case, neoprene strap, rainguard and objective eyecups The Nikon Prostaff P3 binoculars are entry-level and we were really impressed when reviewing them. Nikon has saved on manufacturing costs where it counts, mainly in the accessories that these binoculars ship with, but has retained the high-quality optics that I expect to see in a Nikon product.

Central focusing wheel – used to bring an image into focus for both eyes equally. It should be used in combination with the dioptre adjustment. With a design completely devoted to being lightweight and compact Zeiss have optimised these binoculars in every respect. They have reduced the lens diameter by 2mm* which has in turn allowed for thinner lens elements to be installed. Eye Relief is the distance the eyepiece of a binocular can be held away from the eye and still present the full field of view. This is important because longer eye relief reduces eye strain and makes it easier for people who wear glasses. The longer eye relief would provide a full field of view for someone who wears eyeglasses. A rule of thumb is, if you wear glasses, you'll need at least 15mm of eye relief. My tried and well-tested pair were replaced with Zeiss 8x42 SFs a few years ago, which are the pair I use every day. The new 8x40 SFLs (the L stands for lightweight, to go with the smart focus of the SF) take the SF design and tweak it, losing the hinge near the objective end, but retaining the comfortable position of the (1.5 finger wide) rubberized focus wheel (which performs very well, smoothly and precisely, with just less than one and a half turns from close to infinity). Look at a fixed object in the distance through the remaining lens, then use the central focusing wheel to focus the binoculars until the image appears clear and sharp. 4. Cover the left barrel

Field of view: How wide the image appears, in terms of how many metres are visible at a point 1000m away. So, a field of view of 140m@1000m will take in a wider view than one of 120m@1000m. Binoculars can often be described in baffling language. While you don't need to know everything about their anatomy, an understanding of some of the key terms and features will help you get the best out of yours.Relative Brightness is the exit pupil squared. The relative brightness has no relation to how bright a pair of binoculars will be. The quality of the optics has more to do with the brightness of the binoculars than exit pupil size. When out on the water, a rugged, waterproof design is essential. Low magnification will make it easier to see on a pitching boat. A magnification of 7x to 8x should do just fine. You will also want a larger objective lens. Look for an objective lens that is equal to or greater than 35mm. Suggested size: 7X50. Astronomy
