We all love our Broadway musical flops. I know that, for me, it has nothing to do with enjoying shows that died upon arrival, but rather, the mystery behind why they failed. Even the worst flop hasan interesting story behind its creation and Mandelbaum affectionately (but honestly) explores that history. The author conveys a balancedexplanation for dozens of Broadway musicals that failed. What makes the book even more special is that he finds the positives in each piece, realizing that a show is seldom just awful, it just doesn't work. This is a biography written by lyricist and book writer Alan Jay Lerner that details the ins and outs of his career, with a major focus on the Broadway musicals My Fair Lady and Camelot. If you ever want to know the details behind the struggle of creating a Broadway musical, Lerner lays down his cards and shows you everything. It is a terrific study in how great musical theatre used to be made.

On the Street Where I Live by Alan Jay Lerner

Students are obliged to take care of their own belongings. Stagecoach can accept no liability for lost or damaged belongings. Because it's so well-made and easy to use, I choose this book over the more detailed ones more often. Zadan is clearly a fan of Sondheim, but he doesn't let that get in the way of telling the truth (and sometimes blunt honesty). The book ends with appendices that are very well-organized and give a lot of information about major productions of Sondheim's work. There are also a lot of great pictures from Sondheim shows that are worth mentioning. On the Street Where I Live by Alan Jay Lerner

To apply for a place for a new Student on a Stagecoach Activity, the Parent must agree to these Terms & Conditions and submit an application form online or by post. Which of these middle-grade books about music and musical theater have you read? And which ones did I miss? I’m always happy to add your lovely recommendations to my TBR and I know other readers find them useful as well! Alan Jay Lerner wrote a biography about his work as a lyricist and book writer. It talks about his career, with a lot of attention paid to the Broadway shows My Fair Lady and Camelot. You can find out everything you need to know about making a Broadway musical from Lerner. He puts down his cards and shows you everything. It is a great study of how great musicals used to be made. Rodgers and Hammerstein by Ethan Mordden Nimra’s nervous, but as long as she has Jenna, her best friend who already goes to the public school, she figures she can take on just about anything. It’s 2002. In the aftermath of the twin towers — and the death of her beloved grandmother — Shirli Berman is intent on moving forward. The best singer in her junior high, she auditions for the lead role in Fiddler on the Roof, but is crushed to learn that she’s been given the part of the old Jewish mother in the musical rather than the coveted part of the sister. But there is an upside: her “husband” is none other than Ben Morgan, the cutest and most popular boy in the school. For the avoidance of doubt, the Trial Period and sibling discounts detailed in sections 3 and 4 above do not apply to Workshops or Holiday Workshops/Camps. Show: Stephen Sondheim sits down with his lyrics and talks about how they were written. He talks about his thoughts and how he came up with them. Anyone who likes Mr. Sondheim will enjoy this book. It's a fascinating look into the mind of a musical theater genius. Sondheim & Co. by Craig Zadan Hold Me Closeroriginated in the story of Tiny Cooper’s best friend Will Grayson’s transformative year culminating in the epic production of history’s most fabulous high school musical. Little Women by Louisa May Alcott It’d be “Astonishing” if you haven’t heard this (very overdone, albeit beautiful) performance piece. Sutton Foster brought this song and Jo March to life in 2005. Although its tour and run on Broadway are over, the story still plays on in theaters across the nation. The brilliant musical adaptation is proof that Louisa May Alcott’s novel is still prevalent today.

He is finding that becoming The World’s Best Drummer in no time whatsoever is maybe not the easiest goal. No one has captured the work of the Broadway musical orchestrator quite like Steven Suskin. Suskin, in fact, goes into such carefuldetail that he makes the job of the oft-underappreciated orchestrator a celebration of intelligence and artistry. The orchestrations of a Broadway show are as much a part of how the story is told as the music, book, direction and design. This book will help anyone who loves musical theatre to better understand just what it takes to bring a composer's music to life through carefulinstrumentation. Please note that clauses 6.4 and 6.5 above are subject to your statutory cancellation rights as set out in clause 2 of these Terms and Conditions. Deciding to throw herself into the role, she rummages in her grandfather’s attic for some props. There, she discovers an old violin in the corner — strange, since her Zayde has never seemed to like music, never even going to any of her recitals. Showing it to her grandfather unleashes an anger in him she has never seen before, and while she is frightened of what it might mean, Shirli keeps trying to connect with her Zayde and discover the awful reason behind his anger. A long-kept family secret spills out, and Shirli learns the true power of music, both terrible and wonderful.

Rodgers and Hammerstein by Ethan Mordden

Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare I mean, come on. It’s a Shakespeare classic . You should know it anyway . But if you somehow haven’t read it in school yet, and you’re giving the “But it’s not musical theater!” excuse, then let me remind you of West Side Story. You can’t really understand Maria and Tony unless you know their Shakespearean origins. Kids On Strike! by Susan Campbell Bartoletti Newsies is a Disney movie musical that was adapted to the Broadway stage in 2012. It was based off the Newsboys Strike of 1899. Susan Campbell Bartoletti’s Kids On Strike! tells the stories of child labor and the many children’s strikes of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. This book gives an emotional perspective on this piece of American history as well as more context to the Newsiestime period. Where a new Student is attending a Course for the first time, subject to availability, Stagecoach allows a two (2) session trial period ("Trial Period") so that the Student may try the first two (2) sessions of the Course.
