Description: In the glass, Maker’s Mark has an amber-honey complexion. 90-proof bottling strength gives it strong ‘legs’ that run down the glass when the liquid is swirled.

That being said I feel like maker’s mark number 46 is almost a little too good. It’s almost as if the simplicity that I love about maker’s mark original is overpowered by new flavors and a stronger taste. Those barrels were then rolled into their giant limestone cave and left to rest for about 9 weeks. If you’ve been to their distillery, you’ve seen what I’m talking about – It looks like a mini-NORAD bunker on the side of a hill.I’m ashamed that I don’t give them their due but then bottles like this remind me how ashamed I should be. They’re a consistently reliable sip every time and I always forget about them. Rich and creamy. There are notes of oak, vanilla cinnamon, all perfectly balanced. The Maker's 46 has a big mouthfeel. It is smooth like creamed honey. After the second sip, butter toffee, toast and hints of pepper show up. Water softens the heat a bit, but it is easy enough to drink without water.

Finish: Oak is dominate but tobacco pops up. The tannins are quite nice to find in a bourbon that is this inexpensive. Vanilla latte, cinnamon and toasted caramel round out this moderately long finish. Although they are from different pricing segments, there is a lot to be learned by pouring a couple fingers of bourbon and putting them side-by-side for a blind taste comparison: Original recipe vs. wheat bourbon being foremost. Not as dry as Maker’s and with lots of caramel and dessert notes mixed with wood that slowly fades with a long finish.The Maker’s Mark 46 bourbon is aged longer than the standard Maker’s Mark, so the wood has a longer time to impact on the bourbon. Color me impressed by how good the Cask Strength version of Maker’s 46 ended up being. I won’t say that I’m surprised though because secretly, I’ve always found Maker’s releases to be great. Maker’s Mark 46 is a bolder and spicier alternative to the traditional Maker’s Mark, featuring an oilier mouthfeel and a delightful complexity. It’s an easy-drinking and delicious bourbon. Cherries, brandied fruit, toasted wood and vanilla spice. Adding a few drops of water brings out more spice and woody notes. Nose: There is a particular smell that only French Oak can impart on a whiskey – and the nose on this Maker’s is full of it. Not familiar with what French Oak can smell like? It’s a deeper, more impactful and more dessert-like experience.
