About this deal

The first thing I did was to decide the type of cycle carrier, which for me was a no brainer as I had a tow-bar fitted to my RX400. To find the spare parts you need, please see the diagram below, identify the product codes, then choose them from the list below. Item No. 022 700 Product information ⟩ | STRADA EVO 3 Convenient and multifunctional trailer hitch bike carrier for bicycles, e-bikes, fatbikes and children´s bikes. The fog lights on this special 'GB' version are UK legal, i.e. the fog light is on the right / offside of the car. Other bike carriers with fog lights have these on the left / nearside of the car, which is illegal, (even when the car is used on continental roads!) Atera gets around this problem by using the lighting rig which they supply for BMW bike carriers. This includes a fog light on both sides, and there is nothing illegal about this! We have moved from the VW T6 tailgate mounted carrier to a tow ball mounted Atera Strada DL3. The main reason for the move was that you cannot open the tailgate when the bikes are mounted (and it is less height to lift an e-bike!) This was a pain on our travels when stopping in Aires and wild camping for a night.

Item No. 022 780 Product information ⟩ | | STRADA TRAIL 2 The season breakthrough. Trailer hitch bike carrier for bicycles and e-bikes. The frame is triangular which allows you, when the bikes have been slid out of the way, to stand almost right up against the tow ball. This means you can lift items into and out of the boot both safely and easily. This is not a trivial benefit - most other bike carriers have rectangular frames and although you may be able to open the tailgate easily enough, you usually have to lean across the bike carrier frame to reach the boot space, which is definitely not ergonomic. It is extremely robust and is made from both steel and aluminium, this gives it the best of both worlds. The steel means the carrier reinforces where it need to be making it suitable for heavier bikes (up to 30kg each) yet the carrier only weighs 17.9kg so it is easily manoeuvrable. It's 120cm wide making it a great option if you need to carry bikes with larger wheelbases (up to 143cm). The three of us are out cycling whenever we get the chance and the Strada has been brilliant. Don't underestimate how useful its ability to move away from the tail gate is, when you inadvertently leave something in the boot and you haven't positioned the bikes so you can only the tailgate. Not a problem with the Atera Strada :)

Delivery FAQs

The 63kg weight limit of the Strada DL3 means that it can comfortably carry a couple of electric bikes which typically weigh 20-25kg each. Three ebikes may be a stretch though in terms of both size and weight. Item No. 022 600 Product information ⟩ | STRADA DL 2 Compact and very light trailer hitch bike carrier for bicycles and e-bikes. GENIO PRO ADVANCED Completely foldable and expandable trailer hitch bike carrier for bicycles and e-bikes. The sliding/tilting frame mechanism is easy to use and again there is an indicator to confirm when the frame has returned to its secure position. We have a 2009 Mondeo and we've used this feature several times to gain access to the boot and it's been a huge benefit! Item No. 022 751 Product information ⟩ | | STRADA VARIO 3 Robust trailer hitch bike carrier for bicycles and especially for e-bikes.

Deciding which bike carriers to buy is not always easy, especially as you may not have had experience of using bike carriers before. We hope that our buying guides provide useful guidance about which bike carrier 'strategy' will be most appropriate for your circumstances, as well as highlighting the best features of particular models. We also have troubleshooting FAQs - for example, some customers struggle at first to fit four bikes onto a tow ball carrier, and wonder whether a different carrier would allow the bikes to be spaced wider apart. (It won't, but we have some good tips which make bike fitting much easier.) Having done a considerable amount of research on cycle carriers (google, various forums inc the UK Lexus Forum) I was directed to www.roofbox.co.uk. Bike carriers which are supplied with 13 pin plugs include a fog light and reversing light, as well as rear lights, brake lights and indicator lights – which is why they are often called ‘5 function lights’. You will need a tow ball on your vehicle, factory fitted or fitted by a specialist tow bar fitting business. There are two options for the electrics - the main difference is that 13 pin electrics allow a bike carrier reversing light and fog light to be used, if fitted. In any event we supply adapters free of charge so that 13 pin bike carrier electrics may be used on 7 pin vehicle electrics.Unusually, Thule bike carriers with 7 pin plugs also include a fog light; this works when plugged into 7 pin electrics, but it does not work when plugged into 13 pin electrics via an adapter. We used the Atera Strada DL3 with 2 e-bikes attached on our trip to Spain and Portugal pre-Covid 19 this year. When we first got it I was concerned about the about of movement in the carrier itself. The curved slide mechanism adds to some movement. However, after using continuously on our 4,500 mile trip, it was never removed and did not budge. It was completely fault free and served us very well. A central U-Shaped support bar which is folded flat during storage, but lifted up and clamped in a vertical position in use at a 90° angle to the base. This behemoth can carry individual bikes (non-powered or electric) of up to 30kg each, with a maximum combined weight of 60kg. This is impressive and means you can easily carry two 25kg ebikes and a child’s bike on holiday with you. In addition it can tilt a very long way to allow the car or campervan boot to open – the bikes are almost horizontal! We recently reviewed the excellent Thule Easyfold XT3 and were blown away by its overall design – it’s almost a work of art in the way it can fold up! Unfortunately, the Easyfold is not an ideal choice for campervan owners because it does not tilt far away enough from the vehicle to allow a boot with a big sweep to open whilst keeping the bikes attached.

Item No. 022 684 Product information ⟩ | STRADA SPORT 2 Compact and very light trailer hitch bike carrier for bicycles and e-bikes. Probably the best bike towbar carrier available today and far better than Thule and others. No fuss fitting. Not overly heavy. My wife can fit it on the car. Item No. 022 696 Product information ⟩ | STRADA E-BIKE XL Powerful trailer hitch bike carrier for bicycles and e-bikes.

Item No. 022 701 Product information ⟩ | STRADA VARIO 2 Completely foldable trailer hitch bike carrier for bicycles and e-bikes. Item No. 022 750 Product information ⟩ | | Robust trailer hitch bike carrier for bicycles and especially for e-bikes. If they are plugged into 7 pin electrics via an adapter then the fog light should work, but the reversing light on the bike carrier will not work. a main base unit comprising the lights, electrics, towball clamp and silver bike rails with ratchet straps. If you are an outdoorsy person, riding bikes is probably something you enjoy. However, anyone who rides a bicycle knows the exertion and extra effort of transporting it. If you plan on going somewhere scenic and need to bring your bike, you know that trying to shove your bike in the trunk will do no good.

The extra straps supplied with the fourth bar are worth using - seen comment elsewhere suggesting that they're not essential - but they do reduce flex/bounce with 4 bikes on. I'm sure the carrier would cope without, but there's less going on in the rear view mirror with them fitted. A full set of tail lights and indicators which are connected to your tow ball electrics using a standard EU 13-pin connector The new Strada Trail 2 is the perfect way to combine your vehicle, carrier and bike. If you are raring to go, there is nothing to stand in your way. It measures a substantial 135 x 74 x 25 cm when “folded”, and 135 x 60 x 79 cm when unfolded for operation. It weighs less than the Easyfold though at 18.7kg, but is awkward to lift due to the sheer physical size.Item No. 022 750 Product information ⟩ | | Completely foldable trailer hitch bike carrier for bicycles and e-bikes. It makes sense when using this carrier to place a safety strap around all the bikes and the bike holder support frame. We're therefore providing a free strap with each carrier - one strap per carrier! As well as providing peace of mind the strap will also help to minimise vibration.
