About this deal

The warriors fell on the Sergeant, doing him another wound and leaving him on his last legs. In a final, valiant display of defiance and courage, the Outrider Sergeant brandished his chainsword aloft once more and cut down two of the remaining Necron Warriors. Aside from that, and in spite of a few really tiny components (heads/faces and left arms) these guys aren’t too terrible to put together. Cleaning them up, though is another matter. With mould lines on some of the smallest components, and all the heads are attached to the sprue gates by their chins, for example, getting rid of these may be a bit of an ask for a novice. The Necrons are one such foe. Made of metal and driven by sheer will to regain their former physical forms, the Necron forces search the galaxy for worlds of ancient power, suitable for terraforming to their Overlord’s exact specifications. I am a total novice to Warhammer 40,000. The last time I played a game, I was about ten years old and standing in a tiny Games Workshop (not that there’s any other kind) in my home town, commanding a group of Space Marines against my father – who was playing some Xenos race I’ve long since forgotten – under the watchful eye of an in-house geek who was giving me the basics on how to play.

The ghoulish and spindly – and also concerningly fragile-looking – Necron Warriors await, along with their Canoptek Scarabs. Necron Warriors

Ready Your Wargear

Ok, let’s get into the meat of it, the models themselves – I’ve broken this down into two tables, Space Marines & Necrons After the plastic has been decanted we have the card divider we’ve come to expect in Warhammer boxes. These are usually far more visually impressive than they have any business being for the function they serve. The Artful Divider

There’s also a shallow narrative threading these Missions together, serving as a very subtle way of giving new players a taste of campaign gaming.

Planning Your Army

The sergeant does not last long enough to even cry out. With maximum Hit and Wound rolls inflicted on the doomed sergeant, salvation is impossible and he falls before the cleave of the Destroyer’s devastating dual hyperphase threshers. The set contains the basics for playing a small game of 40; a battle mat, a small rulebook and datasheets that contain the stats of the included models, two rulers and 10 dice as well as a cardboard terrain piece. It’s now that the Necron Overlord makes his move. Turning his glowing eyes to face the Primaris Captain, surrounded by the corpses of slain Necron Warriors, he prepared his once-per-battle move: Tachyon Arrow (which is obviously just like Yondu’s Yaka Arrow from Guardians of the Galaxy, so I’m picturing the devilish metallic dude whistling away).

Please note we are counting the connected models as one sprue, for Example, the Lieutenant and the Royal Warden is one Sprue as they come joined. The term “Model” refers to any unit with its own base.A little PhotoShop wizardry from the Dark Wizard FauxHammer himself reveals what the two variants from this box can look like, option B on the left and A on the right. FauxHammer already took a very comprehensive look at the sprues included in the Starter Set in his Indomitus Review for Miniature Painters which also includes some very handy guides for assembly. (The Elite Edition Starter Set includes sprues A, B, D, E and F from the Indomitus set.) I went with the raised-visor look and defeated Necron on the base for my Primaris Captain. There’s something a bit mediaeval about him that really calls to the historian in me. This is designed to be the box that you buy when you fancy playing Warhammer 40,000 but have no idea how to play the game and have very probably never built or painted anything. Terrain Sprue A gives you a handful of large, solid push-fit parts to create a set of two ruins: one large wall with a small section of ruined first-floor flooring for your soldiers to rain down fire from, and a smaller, lower wall behind which they can crouch.
