A trippy and multilayered story, Perfect Blue is an intense film that isn’t for the timid. As a reminder, this specific release is the unrated uncut Japanese version that contains a graphic rape scene, nudity, and grisly violence. Little is ever fully revealed, leaving audiences wondering just where reality and fantasy meet until the bonkers third act leaves you speechless. Though released in the mid-'90s, it's just as relevant now in the age of social media as it was during the dawn of the internet and fan blogs. Today everyone is an “idol” to someone somewhere. And everyone is now an audience. Terrifying, right? moment from the film. The inside of the steelbook release includes a booklet alongside the Blu-ray and DVD discs. As Mima struggles with her new career path, she is haunted by her past. Original Standard Definition Presentation (SD, 1:21:19) is included in non-anamorphic widescreen. While this is an interesting inclusion If you are wondering in terms of completeness, this Blu-ray and DVD combo release includes almost all of the special features found on the original American DVD by Manga. It is missing an audio commentary by director Satoshi Kon and a longer lecture series found on the Japanese BD. And that, ladies and gentleman, is what will be included in our Perfect Blue Ultimate Edition release! We know some of you may have some questions about what we’ve revealed above, so make sure to you scroll down to the end of this post as we have an FAQ that will likely answer some (and hopefully all!) of those questions.

SD Version (81mins) The unrestored Japanese version with Japanese/English DD 5.1 and Japanese DD 2.0 audio options. Included here for posterity and for those who just can’t let go of their old DVD release. The 1997 anime returned to movie theaters for its 20 th anniversary with a brand-new digital remastering. That remaster serves as the basis for this excellent Blu-ray presentation by GKIDS and Shout Factory. Perfect Blue is shown in its expected 1.85:1 theatrical aspect ratio at 1080P resolution that squeezes everything it can from the original animation and its limitations. The older cel animation, made before digital tools had invaded the animation process, resembles many other Japanese anime productions of the 1990s.Much of Perfect Blue’s turmoil comes not from Mimi struggling to clear her name of murder accusations, but from her attempt to control her own narrative, to put forward an image that isn’t co-opted, as much by the killer as the normal power players in show business. Her inability to decide what kind of person she wants to be is as disturbing as the bloodletting that occurs all around her, and is one facet of what’s allowed Perfect Blue to endure as a masterful articulation of powerlessness in the age of media saturation. Image/Sound Starring: Junko Iwao , Rica Matsumoto , Shinpachi Tsuji , Masaaki Ôkura , Yosuke Akimoto , Hideyuki Hori For more about Perfect Blue and the Perfect Blue Blu-ray release, see Perfect Blue Blu-ray Review published by Neil Lumbard on September 17, 2021 where this Blu-ray release scored 4.5 out of 5. At this time we can say there are plans afoot to release the books without the discs included at some point in the future, but we have no other details we can share on that at this time. That said, as we’ve mentioned this is a brand-new remaster of the film that’s not been included in any previous release, and it does include extras unavailable on our previous Blu-ray release. As Mima’s career as an actress takes off, people she’s working with begin to get gruesomely murdered. Knowing her presence may be causing the deaths, Mima’s guilt starts eating away at her. The pressure of fame and being a star begin to haunt her, seeing visions of herself from her more sanitized pop idol days. Fantasy and reality start blurring for the actress, as the thriller she’s filming starts dipping into darker and darker territory, including a brutal rape storyline Mima performs for the sake of her new career. Mima has to shed her good-girl image if she wants to make it as an actress.
