This is my copy of the Complete French-All-In-One Book. You can see it’s a bit tattered as I’ve used it to teach hundreds of students over the years.There are three books in the series: Discovering French Bleu (beginners), Discovering French Blanc (intermediate) and Discovering French Rouge (advanced). Books one and two provide a huge introduction to basic vocabulary ( all covered here on Frenchlearner by the way), combined with lots of practical dialogues. While I strongly suggest students to master the reading rules, the book provides lots of English phonetics for all the words and dialogues. The option that today has become the preferred alternative for many to learn the language. Additionally, we also created a collection of French exercises so that you can test and evaluate your level.
By using texts that contain grammar as their key focus, you can really take the time to learn the complex rules and begin to understand how they function in the real world. The Discovering French Bleu is very good for a pure beginner, especially for slower learners. The information is presented in a very gradual manner and the pace is not intense. Split into easy-to-manage chapters. “Collins Advanced French Grammar” is organized into chunks, perfect for getting through one lesson at a time. Grammar points are not overwhelming or complicated, so the book will help build your confidence. The reason I like this book is that it lays out French grammar in a very methodical and logical way. My private lessons follow the outline of the book.This book explains different methods to write a given sound, in addition to providing lists of homonyms (words with similar pronunciations but different meanings) to be aware of. Focus on self-study. Solo students rejoice; this book is written under the assumption that most of its readers won’t have a teacher at hand to explain things. As a result, grammar rules are laid out clearly and explained in careful detail. Lessons are completely comprehensive, ensuring that you have understood everything before beginning new material. Possessive adjectives define whom the noun belongs to. Of course, like everything related to nouns, they agree in gender and number.
This book is a perfect way to understand how grammar rules work and how you can apply them to fit into the perspective of the language. The next book which I’d like to recommend is actually three books! I’ve had these books on my shelf for many years and have used them with countless students. The book puts a heavy emphasis on the French phonetic symbols. While these may seem daunting at first, Dr. Nachmann’s book is so methodical, by the end you’ll be an expert in French pronunciation. Personally, I’d suggest the Berlitz book for somebody who already has some French under their belt. The sheer quantity words in the book could be a bit overwhelming for a pure beginner.In addition, the publisher could have done a better job providing translations of more vocabulary words in the margin.
