It's not an alter ego. It's how an actor plays a part, a character they're playing. Whatever is happening to me is happening to her, because I am her. Though I definitely meant what I said about Electra Heart being the antithesis of me, it's not as primitive as that. The whole concept was inspired by realising an Aristotle book called Poetics.* It's about analysing Greek Tragedy, and I saw so many parallels between that and Hollywood that I realised old Hollywood is our modern-day mythology, people like Marilyn and Elvis. In December 2012, Marina revealed she was working on a fan film titled "HEARTCORE" (sometimes stylised as "HEARTC♡RE"), which would document her tour across the USA. [45] A few months later, in March 2013, she shared a preview, [46] however, the documentary never came to fruition. It makes sense that critics didn’t like it. Diamandis mentioned that “the blueprint was a goth Britney Spears,” a star who was notoriously treated poorly by the media; Spears was dismissed, underestimated, and publicly trashed for her open sexuality. Electra Heart is aware of those consequences, so it is unsparing. The album is indulgently grotesque and desperate to provoke: “I want blood, guts, and angel cake/ I’m gonna puke it anyway,” she intones on “Teen Idle.” It’s also unapologetic: “I know I’ve got a big ego/ I really don’t know why it’s such a big deal, though,” she drawls on the buzzy “Primadonna.” It mixes artifice with earnestness; it gives in to female stereotypes while also breaking free of them. When telling NME about the concept of the album, she prefaced it by saying, “It’s a bit cringe.” But that’s the best part. Marina said she found pop songs, because of their simple lyrics, harder to write, and why she co-wrote with the likes of Dr. Luke. [22]
