The word "latex" can be used generically, not just to describe 'latex rubber'. In the Firefighting Measures section of the Captain Tolley material safety data, the advice is given that "The wet latex will not burn". Copydex is based on natural rubber latex. A much cheaper solution is to use copydex, as it's the same stuff, (Latex). You may have to thin the copydex a bit, as cpt tolleys is quite runny, hence it's ability to creep. You could apply it with a syringe from any chemist.Overall, the Soundaseal RV61 is a versatile caravan sealant that’s ideal for the roof, windows, awning rail, skylight and many other surfaces within your caravan. It isn’t the cheapest but it provides a high level of adhesive strength and used by many major caravan manufacturers.

The Soundaseal RV 61 is a highly rated caravan sealant which the brand state is used by many major manufacturers in the UK. The chemically neutral hybrid polymer is designed for interior or exterior use and forms a strong yet elastic bond that resists the effect of vibration. The Sikaflex 512 is by far the best caravan sealant on the market and suitable for most caravan or motorhome repairs. It’s slightly more expensive than the alternatives but it’s the ultimate sealant that won’t disappoint.FAO Admin - Sorry if I have stepped out of line here, but I felt I had to answer Angus. I will not respond again in this thread. You did indeed, but my point was that you then also answered another question that had not been asked. I beg to differ. I had a minor leak and it did cure it. The van was still dry when sold some years later.

Another sealant that’s dedicated to caravan or motorhome repairs is the Hodgsons Seamseal CV. It’s a versatile sealant that’s suitable for a wide variety of joints that can be found in a caravan. Compatible with a wide variety of materials; rubber, glass, wood, hard plastics, existing sealants, concrete, ceramics, metals and fibreglass. The Captain Tolley stuff and Copydex are both latexes, with the former being a synthetic latex and the latter comprising a latex rubber compound. But the constituents of each product are not the same.OK .... point taken Derek. However the proof of the pudding is in the eating. I have used Captain Tolleys on 3 occasions & each time it has done the job perfectly. If anyone has the patience to answer the following questions, one word answers (almost) if preferred, I would be most grateful

An alternative caravan sealant to the other formulas within this article is the W4 Mastic Sealing Strip. It comes in a 5 metre reel and is ideal for sealing awning rails, roof lights, vents, windows and many other components. According to the brand, it’s formulated to be thinner than water and is able to penetrate deep inside of the narrowest of surfaces. Once settled, it produces a clear waterproof seal that prevents leaks. I applied several layers of shellac and the leak in the picture is fixed. It's not as perfect as a new section, but I'm satisfied with it now. Before applying any of the sealants listed above, you will want to ensure the surface is clean, dry and free of any grease or oil. Depending upon the application, many of the sealants can also be sanded down and painted over.

A couple of years ago, my Citroen 2CV screen was leaking badly on a trip to S of France - 2-3 litres/hr! Capatin tolleys in 2 applications solved this and it hasnt leaked since.
