As a child, I was always fascinated by fairy tales and by that I don’t mean the Disney-ish stories that some kids are spoon fed, but the real folkloric tales, as they are told from generation to generation, from mouth to mouth so to say. I would say this book is for older readers because it is a very complicated book to read because one chapter destiny is talking and the next sunset is talking. A bit of grit always appeals to me in novels- I like to know that the author won’t shy away from anything difficult, and Golding proves herself right away with ripped stitches and an invasive fix made by a doctor who says “tell me to stop if it hurts too much,” and then doesn’t. Brooks places the epicenter of the Bigfoot war in a high-tech hideaway populated by the kind of people you might find in a Jurassic Park franchise: the schmo who doesn’t know how to do much of anything but tries anyway, the well-intentioned bleeding heart, the know-it-all intellectual who turns out to know the wrong things, the immigrant with a tough backstory and an instinct for survival. I knew it was meant to have spooky bits in it, but I’m so desensitised it normally does nothing for me.Drowsing on the maternity ward with her newborn twins, Lauren Tranter hears a sinister voice singing. Little does she know that her role as guardian will be challenged that very night, when she encounters a dirty, smelly disheveled woman who attempts to steal her babies. I remember that once when I was about six or seven or so, I found a very old-looking book through my aunt's things. The book is based on changeling folklore, in which human children are abducted by fairies and replaced with fairy children.Thanks NetGalley and the publisher for a free, electronic ARC of this novel received in exchange for an honest review! However, I can only say very little about Little Darlings because too much backstory about folklore might 1) cause your eyelids to droop, 2) make you think I’m a little batty (you wouldn’t be entirely wrong), and 3) most importantly, give entirely too much away. I think it would have been interesting if there had been a DNA test because the relationship was assumed throughout the book. I read this in like mild curiosity after borrowing it from my younger siblings bookshelf cuz I had nothing else to read i read it in like one sitting in a few hours.

The letters between Sunset and Destiny were a fun way of having them interact and I enjoyed seeing how their friendship developed. Destiny wins first place in the talent show and sends a DVD to Sunset of it and at the climax of the book, Sunset shows Destiny's DVD to the show "Little Darlings" producer and at the end we see how Destiny comes to Robin Hill and Danny's house in a limousine and is welcomed, albeit for the cameras, as one of Danny's talented daughters. The two main protagonists’ personalities really shone through, and all is not what it seems with Harper. I enjoyed both of them as characters and wish this had been more of a focus as the majority of the book favours detailing different events that show how incompetent each parent is, which felt dragged out after a while.Everyone wants to dismiss her as mentally ill except Detective Sergeant Joanna Harper, who has her own reasons for believing Lauren. Little Darlings is her first novel, and has been optioned for screen by Free Range Films, the team behind the adaptation of My Cousin Rachel. Sunset lives in a mansion with her rockstar Dad and her Model mum and her little siblings, she has everything she wants and more. Harper is sucked into Lauren’s claims that she keeps seeing the woman and her babies are in trouble.
