About this deal

It doesn't get too much into technicalities and that's why it was way more enjoyable than I had expected. In fact, some sections can be turned into self-help material on how to introspect, acknowledge, work on and overcome your flaws. Very few leaders understand the importance of both hard and soft skills and how getting both of them firing at the same time can be a game changer. It may appear as if Boucher lacks the warmth and soft skills to develop a relationship with Du Plessis.

If I wanted something from him besides cricket, it had to come from me, and I wasn’t comfortable with that being our dynamic. I just wish we all live to see FAF’s vision of a diverse and unified Proteas team, winning a world cup, become a reality. Although Du Plessis showed incredible discipline in his cricket career, it wouldn’t be until he turned 26 that that discipline was also a part of his personal life. However, I found the style the book was written in to be too repetitive and I often wanted to skip a couple of sentences as I had already caught on to what he was trying to communicate. In trademark Du Plessis humour, he describes a gathering organized by De Villiers on the eve of a Test match against England in January 2005 in which he scored 92 and 109.Both, Domingo and Gibson, invested in their relationship with du Plessis and bought into the team culture that he was trying to create. world cup selection controversy and South Africa's disappointing world cup performances - his autobiography gives a unique, behind the scene perspective into all of these and more. His ability and willingness to engage in tough conversations is unusual and sets him apart as a leader. Although Du Plessis was not part of the team present at the camp, the ideas revolving around team culture would build the foundation for his career as a player and captain.

Du Plessis understood the impact of social media on a player’s mental health after he, and his family, received death threats following South Africa’s loss to New Zealand in the quarter-final of the 2011 World Cup. South African player resource drain is quite evident, and if not for Faf's love for representing South Africa, he could have been another KP.For the team to be accepted by 60 million South Africans as the national team, cross-cultural integration would be vitally important. The first part of the book which is about his schooling and youth cricket career is interesting, as is his decision to pursue cricket full-time after school and his days playing club cricket in England, where for a season he slept behind the scoreboard. Faf Through Fire by Faf Du Plessis is this account from his childhood days to playing the domestic and then for the Proteas, and his long journey from debuting in ODIs to Tests, playing in IPL, World Cup, and experience with Dhoni, CSK, and RCB! Admittedly, Du Plessis was “disturbed” because all the individuals in the picture were from the same cultural background, and he believed that the team needed to mix more consciously if it were to truly represent all South Africans.

With the ongoing Cricket World Cup and the craze of the sport, I started reading the autobiography of one of the cricketers whose presence on the ground was cherished by cricket lovers. Considered to be the last in the golden generation of Proteas, he also won silverware with the Titans and his IPL franchise, Chennai Super Kings, multiple times. Faf: Through Fire explores the human element of an accomplished international cricketer, who was driven to serve South African cricket by investing in the human beings that represented all of South Africa on the cricket field.Widely considered to be a future South African cricketer right from his school days at the Afrikaanse Hoër Seunskool, it would have been fair to assume that Du Plessis’ autobiography would revolve around his numerous cricketing exploits. When Mark Boucher was appointed to coach the Proteas after a tumultuous period for South African cricket, Du Plessis struggled to connect with him in the way that he did with Domingo and Gibson. Fascinating autobiography that taught me so much on the importance of soft skills in leading a team, as well as a growth mindset. I felt the writing style could have been much crisper, tighter and a more linear pattern of storytelling would have been a better choice. It gives good insight to the behind the scenes and politics that we don't see on screen and dives into what it's like to not only play for the Proteas but what it's like to lead the Proteas during a rather difficult time in South African cricket and sports in general.

It’s quite possible that I was still part of Mark’s plans for the future, but he had an approach to leadership that didn’t include soft skills and relational interactions. This showcases his determination to succeed and fight it out to come out on top by taking the longer road towards cricket stardom. It took him years to connect with this side of himself but, when he did, it shaped his relationships with people and ultimately his captaincy of the Proteas. The Du Plessis-Boucher partnership, in addition to Graeme Smith being appointed as Director of Cricket and Jacques Kallis as a batting consultant, was supposed to herald a new day in South African cricket.
