At WGPS we believe reading is essential for academic success but, more importantly, we value reading as a key life skill, and are dedicated to enabling our pupils to become lifelong readers.Any child with a SEND, who would struggle with cognitive overload from the pace of the Rapid Catch-Up programme, is assessed on the SEND assessment and the best SEND pathway and planning is selected for them accordingly. This training is open to all members of the leadership team who are working with the Reading Leader on programme implementation and development. We use the Rapid Catch-up assessments to identify the gaps in their phonic knowledge and teach to these using the Rapid Catch-up resources – at pace.

There may be a number of reasons why children in Year 2 and beyond are not yet able to decode confidently or read fluently. The first 5 weeks recap Phase 5 Phonics, the next 5 weeks teach bridging to spelling and the last 20 weeks are based around spelling. Every adult at Wooburn Green is trained to deliver Little Wandle phonics and reading to ensure that phonics and reading are delivered in the same way in every year group and by every adult. The purpose of the screening check is to confirm that all children have learned phonic decoding to an age-appropriate standard. This is a much faster paced and age appropriate version of the Little Wandle scheme which enables children to access age appropriate reading and therefore the full curriculum much more rapidly, and also prepares them for the KS3 curriculum when they move onto secondary school.My DS is currently reading at the hardest end of Phase 2 (summer born reception) which probably equates to the easier end of red books using the list someone linked earlier. Each book also contains parent’s notes and a ‘retell the story’ activity to support children’s comprehension and vocabulary skills. The 7+ books in the Big Cat Little Wandle Letters and Sounds Revised series are designed for children aged 7+ who need more practice to acquire phonics skills.

We have integrated Phase 6 throughout much of the programme as children need to be able to read words in the past and progressive tenses and with the suffixes in Phase 6 so that they can read fully decodable books that have a normal syntax and are not constrained by a restriction on verb tenses.Phonics is delivered every day in Reception so that children have plenty of opportunities to revisit, practice and apply their phonic knowledge. At Wooburn Green, we understand that being able to read is the most crucial skill that we can teach our children as without it they will find it increasingly difficult to access other areas of the curriculum and their life chances will be significantly reduced.
