About this deal

A strong mid-range delivers excellent fidelity and a great deal of warmth in the music while a satisfying low-end provides the score and action with some appreciable and presence. Europe's busiest forums, with independent news and expert reviews, for TVs, Home Cinema, Hi-Fi, Movies, Gaming, Tech and more.

Not to be outdone by the tidal wave of 'Bruceploitation' films that followed, Golden Harvest completed two posthumous films using unreleased footage, 1978's Game of Death and its 1981 sequel, as well as two official documentaries, the first of which hit cinemas only three months after Lee’s death. documentary instead – not just all two hours of Lee’s dailies that remain, but with an insightful wraparound and commentary over the top to give a complete run down of the project as intended, with stage directions, themes, choreography breakdowns and a wealth of brilliantly delivered titbits, it’s one of the very best documentaries on a film project I’ve seen. The rest are Blu-rays, including Enter the Dragon and Game of Death II, with also excellent audio and video presentations of each, and the other four bonus discs house exhaustive featurettes of Lee's life, impact and legacy, as well as alternate versions of the aforementioned Bruceploitation movies. Lee’s first film for the studio was The Big Boss and it proved to be a massive hit in Hong Kong, breaking all sorts of box office records, making him an instant star.

However, from the looks of it, it appears that they used the same master created for the 4K transfer above and simply re-edited the previously deleted scenes back into the film.

Of course, I simply had to get hold of a copy (of the Blu-ray set, I haven’t upgraded to 4K yet) to give my thoughts here. Everything that could be said of Bruce Lee's final but sadly, incomplete film Game of Death has really all been said. If you find out that you really like them, invest in the set—it’s a chunk of change, but also very comprehensive. The hot-tempered Chen not only beats up the man and his friend, but Lee goes one further by kicking the offensive sign and breaking it in midair. It's a great, memorable moment that blatantly renounces bigotry and clearly establishes the plot's anti-colonialism theme.

The colors are bright and vibrant, especially in the single-hue robes worn by different groups of Shaolin students watching Lee spar in the opening sequence.Alternate Japanese Version (4K Dolby Vision HDR, 110 min) is mostly identical to the international release, but it features an alternate edit of the Ji Han-jae fight and some changes to the soundtrack. Black levels are on point and rich with strong shadow detailing throughout, providing the 4k transfer with appreciable dimensionality.

Especially in comparison to the near pristine nature of what’s just been seen, fine detail never quite resolves at the level of the two previous films, especially in the film’s first act which looks very soft. individual DigiPacks for the discs held in a box that measures approximately 5 3/4" wide x 7 1/4" high x 5" deep. and yet upon its premiere in Hong Kong, the crowd erupted over it and Lee, instantly recognising the birth of a major star. Not only does his quick visit to get laid seem out-of-character, but it’s also ridiculously placed just before the final fight, straight after Lee has psyched himself up to get revenge! Sure, there’s still a lot of stuff out there on Lee – some of which is notably on Criterion’s recent boxset – which again, likely rights issues preclude their being here, but the combination of the archive supplementals that have been sourced and the staggeringly good new features included here really should satisfy all but the most ravenous of Lee fans. Starting at the very beginning, of the five films being looked at – The Big Boss, Fist of Fury, Way of the Dragon, Game of Death and Game of Death II – all were shot on 35mm, using the anamorphic process (whereby the widescreen picture shot – in the case of these films, at 2.
