About this deal

Unlike books such as the exiles, the book does not focus(for bad or for worse) on the convicts, but on the free settlers and the ordeals which they also had to go through. Nostalgia Central covers the period 1950 to 1999 and contains some words and references which reflect the attitudes of those times and which may be considered culturally sensitive, offensive or inappropriate today.

Women are used as a barometer for the brutal toughness of the task, with many reduced to whoring or the equivalent as the mistresses of much older men. I hadn't seen it before, and it is slightly worrying that I now look forward to the different idents, break bumpers (also present on all episodes) and end credits as much as the programmes - thank you Network! Little aired since that date, it's a surprisingly lavish affair with a large cast, huge scope, and plenty of production value. He also has to contend with rustlers, travelling con men, escaped prisoners, aboriginal raids and cut-throat gangs.Luke's father Jason (James Condon) is representative of a more naïve generation who somehow believe that all the righteousness of the empire will follow them into the wild, and he is constantly disappointed that the old guard often turn out to be the most corrupt, Fortunately for him, and the family, Luke is under no such delusion.

The quality of the film used, then, and its colour was not as good as today's film but that is soon forgotten as the stories unfold. They provide expert and detailed descriptions, disclose all significant defects and/or restorations, provide clear and accurate pricing, and operate with fairness and honesty during the purchase experience. Though Australia was already fast-filling with expelled criminals, the Firbecks, a fine upstanding family, leave their Yorkshire home for the promised land. Luke’s illegal activities in establishing a squatter’s ranch allow plenty of opportunity for conflict with the penal colony’s governing body who refuse to recognise his claim to the land. The series shows the struggle for survival in the early days of Australia in all it's brutal, corrupt, lawless and miserable glory,no punches are pulled, and it makes the wild west look like Trumpton!

Archive TV fans may also like to know that the series was produced by Tony Essex of 'Follyfoot' fame. Guests stars on the show included Jack Thompson, John Meillon (pictured), Peter Sumner, Max Cullen, Cul Cullen, Judy Morris, Colin Croft, Chris Haywood, David Gulpilil and Kate Fitzpatrick. Although we maintain a broad general collection, we have a concentration of material on the American Southwest and Indians of North America, both history and literature. Executive producer and former BBC documentary man Tony Essex died 10 days after the series was finished. The arrival of an uninvited guest causes complications for Luke because of an association he builds up with Jassy.By episode four, Jason concedes that his son's more brutal view is the right one and he somehow falls in line. It's 1829, Jason Firbeck, a retired naval Leiutenant, recently widowed arrives with his family - Samuel, his elder son, Luke, his second son and Jassy his daughter - in NSW, where land granted by influential friends, supposedly awaits him. Used to like this programme years ago and bought it to see if it was as good as I remembered, I was not disappointed but thought it was a longer series than it actually is. Naturally all of the residual British military are cads, bounders and buffoons, though the convicts are often portrayed as decent of desperate men, still struggling to get an even break. Set in Australia in 1829, follow the tale of a family led by a retired naval lieutenant recently widowed who take his two sons Samuel and Luke and his daughter Jassy to New South Wales. The programme's popularity at the time (and no doubt part of its enduring appeal) is the smolderingly handsome Luke himself, played by a pre-'The Bitch' Oliver Tobias at his physical prime. Overall, I would say that, for those who remember this with affection and who are able to look over the flaws of the print, there is much here to enjoy. The cover may have some limited signs of wear but the pages are clean, intact and the spine remains undamaged. Starring Oliver Tobias and produced by Tony Essex, the series is an epic adventure series set in Australia as it is being colonised. Though this may have more in common with 'Rawhide' than 'Pride and Prejudice', the show is clearly historical drama nonetheless, and there is much to be learned about the early colonisation of Oz. The recently widowed and retired naval lieutenant James Firbeck takes his family, sons, Samuel and Luke and daughter Jassy to New South Wales to claim a grant of land. The incestual overtones are a bit creepy and apparent almost from the word go, but are intitially so brief you wonder if you are imagining them.
