About this deal

I will never give up my faith in spite of what the leaders of this country keep pushing on the people. When a tall, handsome Russian prisoner named Alexander is sent from Dachau to work in their garden, lonely Annaliese finds herself drawn to him as they tend to the plants together. Themes: Thought-provoking themes include fear of people because of their nationality, starting over, survival, grief, acceptance, PTSD, atrocities and effects of war, life-changing choices, turning a blind eye, hardship, friendship, and prejudice. I liked the different POVs: one was that of a married German woman and one was that of an American girl who grew up and also married.

These people were our enemies and yet they are given lovely homes, jobs that pay very well, freedom, and eventually they will become citizens. It made me think about that awful time when Hitler ruled and the atrocities innocent people had to endure. But what really made this book one I will never forget was the emotional connection I felt with the characters and story itself. In 1930, in Berlin, Germany, Sofie von Meyer Rhodes and her husband Jurgen are happily married and very much in love but hardly making ends meet. It might seem like a lot and initially I had my doubts about the second POV, but in the end I liked how the different POVs and timelines complemented each other and the past timelines were essential in understanding both Sofie and Lizzie in the present. He thought that by being a doctor in Dachau he would be able to help the world by finding a cure for malaria.

Yet, I am overjoyed that I refused to let those sentiments enter my brain as I would have missed out on reading this accomplished powerful book. Berlin, 1930 —When a wave of change sweeps a radical political party to power, Sofie von Meyer Rhodes’s academic husband benefits from the ambitions of its newly elected chancellor.Sofie, now the mother of four, misses Germany terribly and struggles to fit in among the other NASA wives. By filling us in on each character’s backstory, Rimmer creates well-drawn characters and helps us understand their motivations, fears, and vulnerabilities.

Although Sofie and Jürgen do not share the social views growing popular in Hitler’s Germany, Jürgen’s position with its burgeoning rocket program changes their diminishing fortunes for the better.Unless explicitly stated that they are free, all books that I review have been purchased by me or borrowed from the library.
