The child may not be able to read at this reading level yet, but he or she can still appreciate the the book and build comprehension. Okay, I've done a fair amount of camping, though very little with an RV, but even I know you usually unhook the camper and definitely block the wheels! Great pacing keeps the story moving even though it's long, and manages to have age appropriate thrills as well as some classic camping scenes. Magee and his little dog Dee have yet another silly and unexpected adventure in this new addition to the popular series.
Before we even read the book, I had the students look at the cover and tell me who they thought the main character was and what the setting was. Magee and his trusty dog, Dee, are enjoying a peaceful camping trip when along comes a lumbering, marshmallow-loving bear and the excitement begins. Author/illustrator Chris Van Dusen brings humor, adventure, lively language, and richly colored, kinetic illustrations to all of his children’s books.What makes the Magee books even more magnificent is that fact that the text on all 36 pages is written in sweet, humorous and intelligent rhyme. Magee series, Llama Llama Loves Camping and Curious George Goes Camping will love this outdoor adventure with Mr. I sat on the floor with the student as I read this story and they were constantly commenting on the pictures. Magee and Dee leave home bright and early to learn how to ski - but a run-in with a moose finds them flying through the air and suspended a hundred feet above an abyss!
The illustrations also perfectly capture the mood of the story and complement and elaborate on the heart of the story. I loved reading this book, the illustrations were amazing and looked very realistic and I liked the rhyming throughout the story. The camper almost goes down a 50 foot waterfall, but the bear thinks the hitch is a marshmallow, so he grabs it and pulls it to shore before realizing it was a dirty, less-than-tasty, hitch instead.I read this book to my kids when they were little, and now I use it at school (I'm a school counselor) in classroom guidance lessons. As stated above, we used this book to learn some vocabulary words that some of the students didn't know. I again like the retro Maine setting, and that the milkman's truck seems to make a subtle appearance in every Mr. Magee books are certainly not easy to create, Van Dusen published the three existing ones between 2000 and 2010.The bear undoes the camper's hitch by accident (trying to reach the marshmallows), and the camper careens down to the river below. Chris Van Dusen is definitely near the very top of my list of favorite illustrators ever and in this book he's at his best. For cause and effect they could describe what caused the bear to invite himself to the camper and what was the effect of the bear inviting himself. I am biased because pictures are what makes or breaks a book for me so I love this book and all of the other ones by this author/illustrator. Magee and his dog Dee, they take a trip out on their boat planning on having a picnic whilst out on the ocean. The last one came out just before Christmas 2010, so I guess the next one will be published in 2013/4.This site offers clearly labeled tabs for types of books and shows the front covers of the books, making it easy for children to choose a book to read.
