I so loved this book that made me consider our choices made to get the life that we wish to live and whether the getting makes us happy or makes us long for a do over. Walter Brownley, Charles’s assistant is the protaganist and tells the story of the growing tensions between cultures in South Africa at the turn of the twentieth century and the deepening awareness of the black mission-educated elite, Shades is beautifully written with themes of friendship, love, loss, wavering faith and belonging. At heart a love story, Marguerite has a stunning way with words as she draws you in to each characters life, and all through the novel you are kept thinking of how very different life was back then.In a public library there is usually very little that would prevent a book from being on the shelf if there is a demand for the information. I have graduated high school and college, and I am on my way to graduating grad school before this novel comes out.
