Description
UK products are mainly Tung and/or Linseed oil based, although some use only vegetable oils and synthetic varnishes. We highly recommend giving your furniture a light sand before applying Danish oil (or any other finish for that matter) to remove any imperfections and raised grain.
You can mix certain stains and pigments with Danish oil (check the manufacturer’s guidelines to see which ones work with the Danish oil you’re using), but we recommend staining it before you apply the oil to give you greater control over the stain. When sanding wooden furniture, we always recommend finishing on a minimum of 240 grit sandpaper (even better would be 320 grit paper) for a super smooth finish.
Waxed finishes, and all dirt and grease, should be removed with white spirit on a rag using vigorous agitation. Leave the oil to penetrate for two to three minutes and wipe away any excess oil with a Lint Free Cloth. I really want a natural looking finish that will be hard wearing but won't darken or make the wood yellow.

The second sanding will remove any original finishes applied to the wood such as an oil, wax or varnish. Danish oil is non-toxic, but depending on the brand of Danish oil you’re using, the ingredients vary, so we don’t recommend using it for children’s toys. Stain would be better as it does not penetrate as far and varnish pretty mush just sits on the surface. If you have oak worktops, we recommend using our Worktop Maintenance Kit, which includes the Danish Oil. However, over time it can become brittle from exposure to sunlight, moisture, and other environmental factors.
The natural finish provided with the application of Danish Oil provides water resistance to all woods (including bare wood), helping to reduce staining and make the wood easier to clean and maintain.
At that point, a fa I m not sure, but I may have stumbled across a new technique (to me anyway) to speed up the drying of stain on red oak. A time tested and proven blend of natural oils and resins, the oil penetrates deep into the wood and dries to provide a hard, durable, but highly attractive satin finish.
The upcycling and restoration of all things leather, fabric and wood keeps Furniture Clinic at the heart of the circular economy.
The reason that it has 'stood the test of time' is that until a few years ago there wasn't anything else like epoxy finishes or varnish so people used a delicate finish which was easy to apply rather than nothing at all. This guide has been created to show a few basic tips to keep your oak flooring looking in top condition.
