Starred Review. Hurley explores the mysteries of human behavior and how they might explain strange events - not to mention the evil that men do - better than demonic influence...A complex and highly satisfying work." - Kirkus Common medications may also negatively interact with devil’s claw, including prescription nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), blood thinners and stomach acid reducers ( 31): The story in THE LONEY was electrifying, dangerous, ominous, and menacing, yet also supple, delicate, with a plot and characters fully rounded, from mournful to macabre. I was on the edge of my seat, although the narrative wasn’t swiftly paced, but rather gradual with colossal strength. But I have to wonder if Hurley, in writing DEVIL’S DAY, felt the need or desire to combine some autobiographical material into a fictional story. Dislikes... I didn’t care for the way the story transitioned between past and present. I felt that the changes were confusing and there were times I had to reread a portion, because I missed the switch and was lost. The story was slow at times. This is a story with pull. Its lively, building sense of evil is thoroughly entangled with the assumptions of the way of life depicted, that apparently timeless relationship of the smallholder and the moor' - The Guardian

An unsettling, beautifully written, perturbing novel, that I’m of mixed feelings about… Now, I think I’ll have to read “ The Loney“, the author’s debut… The Puritans living in New England’s early colonies were petrified of the Devil. They believed he gave powers to witches who were faithful to him. This fear gave rise to the infamous Salem Witch Trials in Salem, Massachusetts. In particular, devil’s claw contains iridoid glycosides, a class of compounds which has demonstrated anti-inflammatory effects ( 2). John feels a keen sense of belonging to the Endlands. He feels a familial responsibility to stay and help his father with the arduous work on the farm. Meanwhile, newly pregnant Kat assumes that they will return to their home in Suffolk... The setting of "Devil's Day" is every much a character as are the people who inhabit the Endlands. Very well described, the sense of place pervades the entire story. It is a place where children are raised to continue on in the footsteps of their forefathers. A place where little changes over the generations and neighbours are constants in your life, sometimes helpful and sometimes not so much...

About Fictionophile

As you can see, the story is intriguing from the outside. I thought when I was reading the synopsis that pregnancy and the devil reminded me of Rosemary's Baby but it was nothing like it. Blood thinners: Devil’s claw may enhance the effects of Coumadin (also known as warfarin), which may lead to increased bleeding and bruising. John discovers how much he misses the farm and realizes now that the Gaffer is gone, his aging father will need help. He tells Kat he wants to return home to raise their family and help with the family farm. However, after hearing about a crime the Gaffer committed just before his passing, Kat wants nothing to do with the farm and tries to persuade John to leave immediately. Throw in Grace, a sinister teenager who acts in an eerie, occasionally downright freaky way, plus the recently departed Gaffer, who clearly has secrets to hide, and you've suddenly got a novel that's fraught with suspicion and a sense of the unsettling. Devil's Night is a name associated with October 30, the night before Halloween, in Detroit, MI and the surrounding area. It is related to the " Mischief Night", an informal holiday involving pranks and minor vandalism. However, Devil's Night, especially from the late 1960s to the 1990s, [1] involved widespread serious vandalism and arson in the Detroit area. The community responded by prompting "Angels' Night", a peaceful alternative to Devil's Night. Beginning in the 1990s, the rate of arson began to fall, thanks in part to these community programs.

To this day there's no road sign to the village of Underclough or the few houses of the Endlands. Anyone who needs to come to the Briardale Valley knows where they are, and if a stranger asks for directions then they're told to turn between the abattoir and the three beech trees that keep that part of the lane in permanent shade. As I mentioned in the first paragraph, I absolutely disliked the characters, except maybe April, and she doesn't even play the main role here. I know Karma had lessons to learn, and the devil's trio were all just jealous and in love with her, but their actions, their hurt was hurting me and my eyes. I do like enemies to lovers, I do like the bully trope, but this? They were not for each other. A gang of rotten kids - that's how I felt most of the time anyway. One thing I like about reading A book by an author like say….Lily White p, amongst others is that they doesn’t take the story in the direction you thinks it’s going to go. You were raised a Catholic and served as an altar boy. It must have given you an understanding of ritual.

Andrew Michael Hurley

The problem is that in the Endlands one story begs the telling of another and another,” admits John Pentecost to his 10-year-old son Adam, “and in all of them the devil plays his part.” The obliquity of this statement, perhaps our earliest indication of John’s self-deception, will be revealed as things develop. He is telling Adam the devil’s own story, while Andrew Michael Hurley is telling John Pentecost’s. They are inextricably entwined.

Most original bully romance I have come across. Groundhog day meets Corrupt with faerie theatricality. I could not put this down. I am not a big fan of the RH bully romances but C.M Stunich does them so well. I loved all of the timelines and Karma was such an awesome heroine. Callix, Raz, and Barron are all really interesting characters that I wanted to hear more about their history. That was really the only negative I saw in this book. I wanted more insight into the guys. It was definitely more focused on Karma in that respect. Top Five Tuesday: 5 books that I’m thankful for in 2023 #Top5Tuesday #TuesdayBookBlog @MeeghanReads#TopFiveTuesday November 21, 2023 This may only be Hurley’s second novel, but he’s already a master of his craft, bewildering and chilling his readers at every turn. Hurley is a fine writer, with concerns that place him a little to the left of the literary mainstream, a remove that makes him extremely interesting' - John Boyne, The Irish TimesMost other religions and cultures teach of an evil being who roams the earth wreaking havoc and fighting against the forces of good. In Islam, the devil is known as Shaytan and, like the Devil in Christianity, is also thought to have rebelled against God. In Judaism, “satan” is a verb and generally refers to a difficulty or temptation to overcome instead of a literal being. Religious translations are often controversial. There’s usually some degree of dissent on how to interpret early texts, and texts about the Devil are no exception. Devil's Night is an integral part of the 1994 film The Crow. At a meeting of criminal underworld figures, the main villain Top Dollar ( Michael Wincott) is portrayed as having started the first fires himself, which were later emulated by others. Hurley is clearly an author who believes that less is more, or at least that a reader should be allowed to use their imagination to create pictures in their mind, rather than having images shoved down their throats. Maybe you are asking yourself why am I whining about the poor romance development between the characters but also about the unbelievable length of the book??

Names for the Devil are numerous: Besides Lucifer, he may be referred to as the Prince of Darkness, Beelzebub, Mephistopheles, Baphomet, Lord of the Flies, the Antichrist, Father of Lies, Moloch or simply Satan. This is a very slow tale. The reader is drip-fed the action in-between long bouts of inactivity. But instead of feeling stalled, this gentle and slow unfurling of events allowed suspense rather than action to reign supreme. There was enough plot to keep me intrigued but it was the little details that held me captivated. I didn't like the resolution of this story, but it was well told and everything hangs together satisfactorily, I just wish Karma had found a different path to get to where she did. But, you know what?... I couldn’t care less in the end because I really didn’t give a crap about any of these characters Karma has her own crew of friends who are all the 'not cool' kids at school. A high school made up of rich kids that are unwanted by their parents for whatever reason. Have you ever wondered why the world seems a bit spookier on October 29th? That's because it's National Devil Day! No, don't suddenly jump under your blanket, we're not talking about actual devils here, guys! This day is here to keep your spirits upbeat and give your inner prankster a chance to shine. When is Devil Day?
