Description

In fact, I preferred the eastern zone. It was so dark and poor, but I was drawn by its unknown past. In the course of those dreamy wanderings, I belatedly forged the surprising certainty that my country was united. I was solitary, but my roots clung deeply to German soil. These two people deserve our admiration and respect. They've dedicated their adult lives to the quest for finding out the truth about the atrocities that happened to the Jewish population in France during the time of the Nazi regime /Vichy government. Benjamin interviews people who know of John's childhood on Eridanus II. Hefinds Deon Govender, who used to teach John in Elysium City Primary Education Facility Number 119.Benjamin also interviewsJohn-117's childhood friend Ellie Bloom, who tells him about how she used to play with John and another girl named Katrina. He also managed to find avictim of the Insurrection, Thomas Wu. Benjamin later finds a document stating that John died in 2517at age six, contradicting all the other information Benjamin had discovered. Remarkable . . . Throughout their harrowing work, [the Klarsfelds] maintained a home in Paris and remain to this day devoted to and inspired by each other. A masterful work of historical importance." — Booklist (starred review)

Thank you to Kathleen Donnelly, Carina Press, and NetGalley for the opportunity to read an eARC of this book. Occasionally, for a treat, my father would buy me an ice cream; that was the only way my parents had of spoiling me. I remember women taking the train to the countryside and returning with bags over their shoulders containing eggs and vegetables. I remember the wooden soles on my shoes. I remember the fabric that my mother would receive in exchange for coupons that were much like ration cards and that she would use to make our clothes. I remember how the women of Berlin were able to transform a too-small coat into a dress, how they made “getting by” into an art form. They have been jailed and targeted by letter bombs, and their car was even blown up. Yet nothing has daunted the Klarsfelds in their pursuit of justice. Beate made worldwide headlines at age twenty-nine by slapping the high-profile ex–Nazi propagandist Chancellor Kurt Georg Kiesinger and shouting “Nazi!” Serge intentionally provoked a neo-Nazi in a German beer hall by wearing an armband with a yellow star on it, so that the press would report on the assault. When Pope John Paul II met with Austria’s then-president, Kurt Waldheim, a former Wehrmacht officer in the Balkans suspected of war crimes, the Klarsfelds’ son, dressed as a Nazi officer, stood outside the Vatican. The Klarsfelds also dedicated themselves to defeating Jean-Marie Le Pen’s National Front and his daughter Marine Le Pen’s 2017 campaign for president in France. When Chasing Justice came out last year, I was hoping it would turn into a series since Maya, Juniper, and Josh’s story was compelling, but I felt like there was more to learn… and I wanted to know more. So, I was very glad to discover Hunting the Truth. I will strongly suggest reading Chasing Justice first if you have not already, for the second story will give some spoilers for the first one, so be aware of that possibility even though each is a stand-alone story with a thread woven through them that connects. If that doesn’t matter to you, then dive in for an intense mystery/romantic suspense with more than a few twists and turns. Exceptionally relevant . . . an awe-inspiring account of one couple's relentless pursuit of Nazi criminals . . . The Klarsfelds are reluctant memoirists, Serge explains, but their fidelity to accuracy and their humility regarding monumental triumphs of justice serve as urgent messages to us all." --Elizabeth Rosner, San Francisco Chronicle

As we return to the National Forest K-9 series, Maya is working a cold case, one with personal connections, as she is determined to discover who murdered her mother. Her last memory of her mom was when she’d told Maya to hide, to get away from the bad people. Now, she’s going to find out who killed her mother and, more recently, her grandmother. Both her grandfather and the man she’s falling for are asking her to step away, that this search into the past is far too dangerous. But she cannot. Justice needs to be delivered to those who took the lives of these two loved, important people in her life – and she’s not stopping until that is done. She’s walking into danger with her faithful K-9, Juniper, at her side… and there is not one thing that will stop her. That said, the danger continues to surround her as she gets closer to finding out who is responsible for the murders and attempts to her life. HUNT the TRUTH is an investigative audio series, digital hub, and social media campaign set in the fiction of the tent-pole Xbox title Halo 5: Guardians Maya seems to get right in the middle of every situation. There's an ex-cop who knew her mom. There's two Montana cops here to chase the ex-cop who they say is dirty and wanted for murder. There are witnesses who end up dead, along with other dangerous situations. In the end, Maya and Josh figure out all the cases. That being said, their joint memoir is a rather uneven work. It is told in alternating sections, so you get the viewpoints of both. Some sections, particularly in the early part of the book, make for great reading, as their activities are told in great detail. The later sections were less interesting, with many short chapters reciting efforts directed at individual former Nazis, without a lot of detail. The descriptions of legal proceedings, some civil, some criminal, some seemingly a hybrid, are confusing. I would have liked to read more about their lives in later years and more about their remarkable son Arno. At several points it occurred to me that the inspiring story of their lives might have been better told by a third party.

[4] Episode 02: Bad Records [ ] Main article: Episode 02: Bad Records Assertive . . . Hunting the Truth] helps us understand how these two otherwise ordinary individuals—a nonobservant Jewish Frenchman and a gentile German woman—came to devote themselves with such single-minded daring to the cause of achieving both justice and commemoration for the French victims of the Holocaust . . . The Klarsfelds’ success has been undeniable." —Robert O. Paxton, The New York Review of BooksAn entry about John's death from Katrina's diary. “An obscure record from the far reaches of the galaxy contradicts everything. Government officials and conspiracy theorists weigh in. Stories of a remarkable young man are once again torn down by conflicting accounts.”
